In 1910, Mare Samuella Cromer, a rural schoolteacher in South Carolina, organized a girl's tomato club so females aged 9 to 20 could “not learn simply how to grow better and more perfect tomatoes, but how to grow better and more perfect women.” Soon, there were tomato clubs in a number of states. The idea was simple: Teach rural girls how to plant and grow tomatoes, then harvest and can them, and sell them for a profit. The only work the girls didn't do themselves was the plowing of their individual 1/10th acre plots.

In one notable example, a girl harvested 2,000 lbs. of tomatoes. After sales, she earned a profit of $78 (about $2,470 today). This was *real* money for girls who came from hardscrabble backgrounds.

In 1915, one tomato club girl was quoted as saying the work was “long and sometimes tiresome...It has been a way by which I could not only have my own spending money and pay my expenses at the Farm Camp, but I also have a bank account of sixty dollars." (About $1,881 today.)

The tomato, scientifically known as Solanum lycopersicum, is a plant native land, specifically to the Andean regions. Also known as jitomate in some regions, this fruit is one of the most popular and versatile vegetables in global gastronomy.

Parts of Tomato Plant:

1. Root: Tomato root is fundamental for the absorption of water and nutrients from the soil. Also, it provides stability to the plant.

2. Stem: The tomato stem is the part that holds the plant and connects the root to the leaves and fruit. As the plant grows, the stem strengthens and branches.

3. Leaves: The leaves of the tomato are of an intense green color and have the function of performing photosynthesis, process through which the plant produces its food.

4. Flowers: Tomato flowers are yellow in color and are clustered into clusters. They are fundamental to the reproduction of the plant as they will give way to the fruit.

5. Fruit: Tomato fruits come in different shapes and colors, depending on the variety. They may be round, elongated, yellow, orange, red, among others. They are the most well-known and used part of the plant, being an essential part of the diet of many cultures.



In short, tomato is a fascinating plant with a rich history and prominent role in global food. Knowing its parts and its origin allows us to appreciate even more the importance of this fruit in our daily lives.

This is all you have to do to freeze your garden tomatoes so that you can use them all winter long. Just wash, take stems off and freeze. When you take them from the freezer put them in the sink while still frozen, turn the hot water on them and the peelings just come off so easily this way. I then cut them up while still frozen and add to any recipe.

Mothers Day weekend is the start of my tomato sales and It was my best year ever. It was awesome. The predicted rain /storms turned into a few sprinkles and no rain coats needed. There are 3 sales weekends left. Friday, Saturday and Sunday's on these dates. May 19,20,21, May 26,27,28 and last June 2,3,4. There is plenty of stock but I predict inventory will be low on Memorial day weekend sales.
