As we age, it is very important for us to maintain mobility.

Here are 5 tips for maintaining mobility as we age:

- Engage in some type of exercise/physical activity. Physical activity can prevent major mobility disability.

- Minimize sitting for long hours.

- Use an activity monitor to measure sitting and standing time and to enable health coaches to provide feedback and assist in developing an action plan.

- Use tools to prompt standing or sit-to-stand transitions such as wearable wrist devices, standing desks or tables, mechanical and/or electronic timers, or access to mobile apps or computer programs

According to the CDC, millions of seniors and people with disabilities maintain their independence with the help of unpaid caregivers.

- Close to 60% of all caregivers are women
- 79% of caregivers care for adults aged 50 or older, and 76% of care recipients are aged 65 years and older.
- One in 6 non-caregivers expects to become a caregiver within two years.

While the caregiver's loved ones wellbeing is extremely important to the caregiver, we can't forget the welfare of our caregivers.

The wellbeing of a caregiver is just as important. Everyday they need to be equipped not just mentally and physically but also emotionally.

How can we support caregivers? Some tips include:

1. Help with errands, chores, and other
tasks.
2. Provide emotional and social support.
3. Make sure they are managing their own
health care needs.
4. Help create and manage a care plan
for the person they care for.
5. Encourage them to seek mental health
services if necessary.

Additional resources available to support caregivers include:

- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Caregiving

- The Public Health Center of Excellence on Dementia Caregiving

As we age, preventing falls becomes more and more important. Falls can lead to an immediate need for mobility aids and services either short or long-term.

As we look towards fall prevention for ourselves or loved ones, here are a few things to keep in mind in assessing our homes:

- Stairways, Hallways & Pathways:

Make sure there is good lighting with light switches at the top and bottom of stairs and on each end of a long hall. Remember to use the lights.

- In Bathrooms and Powder Rooms:

Place non-skid mats, strips, or carpet on all surfaces that may get wet.

- In Your Bedroom:

Keep a flashlight by your bed in case the power is out and you need to get up.

- In Other Living Areas:

Arrange your furniture (especially low coffee tables) and other objects so they are not in your way when you walk.

These are just a few things you can do to prevent falls at home. For more info, you may also visit:

July is Disability Pride Month. Its celebrating its 32nd year after the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) which was passed on July 26, 1990, to prohibit discrimination against people with disabilities.

Acknowledging Disability Pride Month requires that you do 2 things:

1. Acknowledge the voices of folks in our society with disabilities

2. Listen to what they say and what they communicate about what they need.
