I saw a Trust today done by a nearby attorney. It didn’t have the language that a Trust needs in Texas to do important things. There is a reason why some attorneys are cheap. The problem is clients don’t know how bad things are till it’s too late. These people have a world of pain on their hands.

My law partner Addie is such a genius at building non-profits for clients….I’m often in awe. Many attorneys can file a nonprofit but a huge number of non-profits die or never gain traction. She is the only attorney I have ever seen first hand that assists clients to breathe life into their non-profit organization.

But I really shouldn’t be surprised because along with her amazing spirit of assistance to client (and her law degree) she has an additional degree from SMU where she studied the creation of healthy vibrant non-profits.

This week was hard watching the struggles of parents with young adult children. Thankfully we were able to help but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Don’t let you child be 18 years old and/or go off the college without making sure they have:

1) medical power of attorney;
2) advanced directive;
3) durable power of attorney;
4) guardianship in case of a need for a guardianship; and
5) a Will.

Being in a position where your child lacks capacity and doctors and hospital systems can’t talk to you. Where you may not even know where in a hospital system your child is. These are the very definition of totally preventable heartbreak.

PROBATE: When you lose someone it’s usually important to go to probate pretty quickly. Please trust an attorney that practices probate, has come highly recommended and cares about you. Our hearts break when we get calls from clients who have spent and often lost far more than they should because their attorney didn’t know what to do at probate, they went to an attorney that didn’t follow their moral code, or they hired an attorney who just plain didn’t care about them.
