A life of balance
Labor Day honors our collective work force as a nation that contributes to the well being of all. It is a day off from work to honor the importance of rest, joy, and communal activity. If we wish to be productive and joyful there is a balance between rest and doing. The movements we practice very often combine this balance. Equal energies of putting out and gathering back in. We can be more conscious of balancing these energies through out our lives, our year, our day and even with each in and out breath. Discover the joy of balance!

It’s not over yet
We still have those precious weeks at the end of August to enjoy the many pleasures of summer. Our seasonal QiGong practice begins to move away from the fire element of the summer to the earth element of late summer. This is a time to feel more rooted and grounded and transition to new schedules and routines. The practice of moving with ease and presence can translate to moving in the same seamless way through our transitions in life. We can embrace change and welcome new opportunities! We have the opportunity to train ourselves in these skills each Saturday in Mitchell Park now through October.

Super Agers
We all hope for the best quality of life for the longest amount of time. Thanks to advancing science and technology people are living longer. A healthy lifestyle can give us advantages as we age. Studies show that a chronological age doesn’t determine the well being of body and mind and it’s possible to be a super ager! Keep moving, eat well, spend time with loved ones, continue to expand in curiosity and challenges, look forward to aging!

Positive Energy
You can practice QiGong and Tai Chi individually and receive many benefits. But when we come together and practice as a group we are enhancing our energy collectively. This can have far reaching effects for enhances our connectivity to our community and humanity. It is a practice of peace and the intention of positive energy benefits ourselves as well as everyone we come into contact with. We can realize we are all interconnected.

Get Outside
Yes you may experience allergies, sunburn and bug bites, but these are all things that can be managed. The benefits to mind and body by spending time in nature can be tremendous. Walk barefoot when the conditions are conducive to experience calming to the central nervous system by grounding to the earth. When spending time in forested areas we can experience our relationship to nature through forest bathing. We are so fortunate we can access beautiful beaches where all our senses can be alert to enjoy. Looking at the sky we can realize we are all a part of something much bigger than ourselves. We are so fortunate to have the opportunity to practice Tai Chi in outdoor spaces to enhance the benefits! Thank you Friends of Mitchell Park and Greenport Town for always providing a safe and inviting space.

Move as One
Many people have had the experience of seeing a group of people moving in unison through tai chi forms in an outdoor venue. They are most often struck by the beauty and peaceful energy this practice embodies. If we look deeper we can see that they are moving as one, that in nature we are all one. That by nature we are all entitled to peace and tranquility and the way to access it is through stillness and presence. Tai Chi in essence is a practice of oneness and presence. A practice of peace.

We had a great crowd for the 4th of July! As you settle into the rhythms of the summer season and acclimate to longer days and hotter weather, it’s important not to deplete your energy and keep your body and mind balanced. Our seasonal qigong is designed to energize and align with our environment to maintain a flow with our activities. This week we will also enjoy crane sequences to activate our power, grace and balance.

I can see clearly now, the smoke is almost gone. I hope all stayed well in the severe air quality conditions we experienced this past week. Our weather has had a lot of fluctuations this spring season. These brave souls were out in 50* temperatures last Saturday. One of the wonderful benefits of tai chi is practicing the ability to go with the flow and create a positive attitude towards whatever may come our way. # tai chi

We had a good crowd for Memorial Day Weekend. It’s always a beautiful tribute to see the posted flags in memory of those who have served on the lawn at Mitchell Park. Tai Chi and QiGong are a practice of remembering. Remembering to be present in each moment and appreciate all that is given to us in each moment. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to have a outdoor practice in such a beautiful and vibrant location. Tomorrow looks to be cool and cloudy so dress accordingly.

Memorial Day Weekend?
Yes please, bring it on!! Having guests? Bring them along to harmonize and balance chi together. This is a great way to start your holiday weekend. First timers are always welcome. When we take the time to take care of ourselves, we are then equipped to help others. Our practice reminds us to be deeply grateful and aware of all that is given to us in every moment. What a gift to enjoy the pleasures of the season if we choose to.

With Gratitude
It’s appropriate at this time of the year that symbolizes letting go and gratitude, to say goodbye and thanks to our Mitchell Park Tai Chi series of 2022. We began in May and had many Saturdays of beautiful and enriching practices. A 501 (c)(3) charitable organization called the Friends of Mitchell Park devotes their time to support cultural, artistic and educational events for our community. A broad range of participants, from young and old, even some canines, enjoyed combining a beautiful public space with community to move and breath in a way that empowers the ability to increase our well being for body and mind. We thank the town of Greenport for always providing a clean space for us to enjoy.
If we are peaceful, if we are happy, we can smile and blossom like a flower, and everyone in our family, our entire society, will benefit from our peace.

Align with the Season 🍁
We can achieve balance and harmony when we go with the flow of what’s happening around us. Trees shed their leaves they no longer support as we can gracefully release that which no longer serves us. Eat fall harvested vegetables such as squashes, cauliflower and brussel sprouts. Dress warmly and stay hydrated in the drier fall air. Our movements can boost our lymphatic system and strengthen our respiratory health. Prioritize your health habits to optimize your immunity in what may be a very challenging flu season.

Boosting Immunity
Less sunlight and cooler days kick off the flu and cold season. Getting enough sleep, eating properly and practicing seasonal qigong can boost our natural immune response. Movements focusing on the lungs and our lymphatic system, can cultivate chi that can improve our bodies ability to maintain balance and health!

Layer up with some sweaters for a cool invigorating practice this Saturday. Only 4 Saturdays left in our 2022 practice.
Look at the trees. Notice how the leaves fall to the ground in a graceful expression of release. At one point, the leaves served a valuable purpose for the trees. They absorbed sunlight and fueled growth. Now, the trees are ready to let go of their colorful leaves and let them become soil for new seeds.
Humans are often fearful of the process of letting go, even when it’s healthy and right. We seek to hold onto things, not trusting that change can be an opportunity for growth.
In Qi Gong for Fall, we take a step back and go inward to realize what we’re ready to let go of. Perhaps we carry sadness or anger that is ready to be released, or maybe we’re able to let go of a job or activity that is no longer serving us. On the other side of letting go exists a space of freedom and opportunity. Once you’ve released the energies and thoughts that no longer serve you, life opens up and you feel a deep sense of expansion and space. Nothing holds as much opportunity as a person who has the space to find what’s right.
