Anson Flower Farm and Nursery

Trees, Shrubs, Perennials, Annuals, Unique Garden Art, Statuary, and Gifts. We are moving 2021-2022. Stay tuned for updates! Anson Nursery is a place to discover.

We opened for the 2021 season on May 1st and closed for the season and at our 591 College Highway location on October 31st. Unique one of a kind trees, shrubs, perennials and tropical plants. Statuary, granite lanterns, benches for any Japanese gardens. Garden art, sculptures and many gift ideas for the serious and novice gardener.

We are officially closed for the season and permanently at our 591 College Highway location. Thank you for your patronage this year and over the previous 23 years that we enjoyed seeing you and being located in the center of Southwick. Our final day yesterday was a busy one and we were glad to see a lot of the remaining statuary (including the last bird bath) and yard decorations purchased. It was great seeing a lot of familiar faces as well, including Chris, the co-founder and family namesake of the business. As many of you know, she was central to the business from day one and long after the end of her official involvement. She also purchased a lot of the remaining items inside the shop (many of which she originally picked out) on behalf of Southwick Florist, where they will be available for purchase.

Going forward, Warren anticipates the remainder of this year and likely most of next year to be dedicated to moving and setting up the new location of the business at his farm just a few miles away in town. As such, he does not plan on opening for the season like usual next May 1st and will not be ordering new inventory, for the start of next year at the very least and likely longer. The new Anson Flower Farm and Nursery is envisioned as being a somewhat smaller operation with business hours 3-4 days a week during the season—likely Thursday-Sunday. Once reopened, Warren will sell the remaining statuary and yard decorations he has on hand, but will not order new merchandise of these kinds. The business will primarily sell perennials, shrubs, and trees. Any outstanding gift certificates you might still have will of course be honored. As Warren gets closer to reopening, Southwoods will revamp and post updated information about the business on the Anson-Nursery.com website, which should be the best and most current source of information at that time.

Thank you again for a great final year at the intersection of Route 57 and College Highway. We wish you and yours a happy and healthy holiday season and look forward to hopefully seeing you again in the future!

Thank you to everyone who came in yesterday and made it a busy Saturday despite the rain. Today will be our final day of the season and ever at our 591 College Highway location. We will be open our normal Sunday hours 10am-5pm. We still have one last bird bath to sell by the end of the day, now $225 instead of $250 and considerably less than the original $670 tag price. All remaining planters (the two pictured here are now only $75 and $100 each), planter heads, rabbit statues, Buddha statues, Buddha head statues, lanterns, and other items are at least 60% off. All offers will be considered. All shrubs are at least 30-40% off and many are 50% off. Trees are 30% off and our remaining Limelight hydrangea trees are discounted to $100. If you haven't had a chance to stop yet, we look forward to hopefully seeing you today!

Happy Halloween! 🎃 Anyone who has been in the shop this season might have noticed we've been prepared for trick or treaters with all of our BJ's and Costco candy. We only have a few packages of Tuxedo Cake Bites left though and those will probably go fast. In addition to treats inside the shop, we still have some nice Halloween ornaments and decorations purchased from a Halloween convention in Chicago. The decorations are all 50% off. We also have flameless battery-operated votive candles to go with our two remaining ghost lanterns.

The two large griffins in front of the shop received a lot of interest this season. Both have been marked down from their original tag prices of $465 to $200 each. When we reopen at our new location, any leftover statuary will return to its original price and we will not be ordering new items. Two of the four remaining bird baths sold yesterday, although we still have the larger two to sell by the end of the day tomorrow. After selling a couple Daniel and an Emperor Claudius head planters this week, we marked down the remaining ones beyond 50% off as well. We still have a Goddess Venus and a young Emperor Marcus Aurelius at $50 and $25, respectively.

Going into our final weekend, we have a large selection of gazing globes on sale now for $40 each. We also are discounting more statuary beyond 50% off, including the final three Japanese lanterns. The last remaining Oscar the watchful gargoyle (dragon) is $75 and we have three laying Chinese Dragons marked down 60% to $100 each.

As the semi-anonymous administrator of the Anson Flower Farm and Nursery page this year and with Sunday being the last day of the season, I want to briefly abuse my privilege with a personal note of sorts. Sunday will also be my last day and I will post a final update Monday morning before deactivating my account. In the years I have known Warren dating back to 2007, I received a world class education in shrubs, trees, and landscaping. I do not know and am confident I never will know a greater authority in these subjects than him. As circumstances permitted it, I really enjoyed being around the past two seasons in particular to help out. I also really enjoyed running the page this season. Starting out in April, I did not know that it would also be a photo diary of sorts documenting the nursery’s last season in the center of Southwick. Thank you to everyone who has messaged, liked or shared, and otherwise engaged with the page over the past several months. I learned a lot and hope that you also found the page interesting, informative, and or helpful. The only thing I enjoyed more than being in touch with those who have liked or followed the page was meeting you in person when you visited this season. Another benefit of running the page was being able to follow other local businesses and groups in town and the surrounding area. Doing so was another reminder of how great Southwick and Western Massachusetts are to be able to call home. Thank you again.

We have a last batch of Shroomyz to sell by closing on Sunday as well. We have plenty of small and medium-size ones, along with several large. They are on sale for $5, $9, and $12, respectively.

Of the 125 bird baths we had this year, we still have 4 left to sell by Sunday. 50% off did not sell these so we have discounted them further. Smallest to largest, their new prices are $75, $80, $100, and $250, respectively. For its size, the latter Three Graces Bird Bath is arguably the best deal, originally priced at $600.

Joining the list of 30% off sales for our final week, we have 3 and 4 foot tall Dwarf Alberta Spruce trees, along with Nest Spruce and Gold Mop Cypress shrubs. We also have one dark purple Bloomerang Lilac left marked down to $15 from its original price of $51.99.

These squirrel statues personally invoke memories of mostly losing the battle to keep them out of my bird feeders (despite bribing them with their own food), but for the squirrel enthusiast in your life, our three remaining statues have been marked down beyond 50% to $25 each. The four Daniel head planters have an outsized presence in our remaining statuary as well and have also been marked down beyond 50% from the original $125 to only $50.

Thank you to everyone who stopped in yesterday to make purchases, along with helping to clear out the remaining plants in our greenhouse. Although Halloween will be our last day, we will be open our usual hours this week--closed today, 9am-5pm Tuesday-Saturday, and 10am-5pm on Sunday. All of our sales will continue or increase this week, but in moving, we are also looking to sell a couple irregular items for a nursery. One is a lightly-used Austroflam pellet stove, originally purchased for $2,700 and on sale for $1,500. We also have a display case that has internal lights, adjustable shelves, and can be locked. We are asking for $500 for it.

Photos from Anson Flower Farm and Nursery's post 10/24/2021

All of the remaining plants in the greenhouse are free! Please help us empty out the greenhouse, although the plants are going fast! We cannot over-winter these tropical plants, but they will be happy to join your other house plants (some plants have been displayed outside the shop during the season and due to the general openness of the greenhouse, spraying them would be a sound precaution).

Thank you to everyone who made yesterday a busy day, especially for late October. It was great seeing some familiar faces and meeting new customers for the first time. A lot of statuary and shrubs, along with a few trees left, but we still have a large variety to choose from until we close next Sunday. In addition to our ongoing sales, our last two Grace N' Grit shrub roses have been marked down to $15 each. We have three varieties of Holly on sale for $20 each, and Winterberry Holly for $10 each. All of these are discounted 60-70% from their tag prices.

Inside the shop we have Music of the Spheres wind chimes on sale for 50% off. Two sold yesterday, although we still have one smaller and two larger sets available. These wind chimes were made in and shipped to us from Austin, Texas.

We will be closing for the season on Halloween, next Sunday October 31st. As many of you may have heard, we will also be closing permanently at our College Highway location. After 23 years in the center of Southwick, we will be moving to a new spot in town. We will post additional information over the next week. In the meantime, all of our sales are ongoing until we close, including statuary and yard decorations at 50% off. A wide range of shrubs are 30, 40, and 50% off. Trees are 20% off and anything not specifically on sale is 20% off as well. As unseasonably warm as it has been, the ground probably will not freeze until December or January, which means roots will continue growing until then. This is still ideal planting weather. Yesterday we added the Compact and Mops Mugo Pines to our shrubs on sale at 50% off. Of the half-price Junipers, the Blue Star has been the most popular, of which we only have two left.

All of our varieties of Euonymus/Wintercreeper are on sale for 40% off. The heavy rain this summer got to the classic green and white Emerald Gaiety Euonymus (even the re-potted ones), but the Canandale Gold, Moonshadow, and Purple Leaf (which features fall foliage) varieties all look good. A classic choice for foundation plantings that is evergreen and provides variegated color, the Euonymus is a relatively low-maintenance choice. One thing to watch out for with them is color reversions to the parent plant due to being hybrids. For example, the Canandale may try turning all yellow. When single color branches appear on any variegated shrub, they should be pruned immediately.

Purple Giant Beautyberry features multi-color fall foliage and large clusters of purple berries that the birds will enjoy between fall and early winter. This cultivar is an improved version of a native shrub that can grow in most parts of the continental United States. For most of the season, the Beautyberry is a green foliage shrub. Its clusters of small pink flowers in spring are popular with pollinators. However, the Beautyberry's greatest visible interest and use as a landscape specimen becomes apparent during the fall. Unlike Holly or Winterberry Holly, for example, you don't need a male and female and only one Beautyberry shrub is required. A few have sold since this picture was taken, but we still have several available that are discounted 25% from their tag price.

We still have a lot of statuary to choose from, including Yolande the dragon, but it has been selling fast at 50% off.

The autumn foliage of the Sky Tower and Princeton Sentry Ginkgo trees. The Sky Tower, perhaps contrary to the suggestion of its name, only grows to 15-20 feet tall and 6-10 feet wide, whereas the Princeton Sentry reaches 40-50 feet tall and 20-30 feet wide.

We have several Lynwood Gold Forsythia on sale for 50% off. These shrubs are in large pots with large root systems. They were hard-pruned the past two years, but will grow fast once planted. Forsythia are among the first shrubs to flower in spring and the Lynwood variety is noted for its particularly large yellow flowers.

We found a couple more of the popular raven statues that had all sold. For anyone who doesn't mind their current appearance or touching up the stain a bit, these two are marked down 60% and 70% from their original price.

The Southwick 250th celebration parade will be passing by us on College Highway this afternoon with surrounding roads closing at 12:50pm. The parade starts at 1pm and concludes at 2:30 pm. We will be open our normal Saturday hours. Although a lot of statuary sold the past few days, we still have a lot still to sell at 50% off. Contrary to a previous post, we realized we still do have a matching pair of urns, along with a couple irregular urns and planters left. The two French Garland Half Planters can be purchased together or individually.

10/15/2021

Among the Fire Chief Arborvitae we replanted in larger pots early this season, we still have a dozen available at 20% off. The Fire Chief naturally maintains its globular shape, requires little to no pruning, and reaches 2-3 feet tall and wide. Its yellow, orange, and green evergreen colors are joined by streaks of red during autumn. I am going to plant one in my yard this weekend. The uses for the Fire Chief discussed in this article are applicable to us with the exception of container plantings, which is a tougher proposition through New England winters than down south.

Our October sale on statuary has increased to 50% off the tag price. This includes all remaining statues, bird baths, pedestals, planters, garden art such as balancers, and stone wall art. Rose of Sharon, grasses, and Juniper are now 50% off and our other sales are ongoing. Our warmer than usual October continues and the next few days in particular look like they have ideal autumn planting weather in store!

A couple sold last week, but we still have several Buddha head statues at 40% off.

Photos from Anson Flower Farm and Nursery's post 10/10/2021

We only have three planters and urns left. They have been marked down 45% and are on sale for $100, $120, and $130, respectively.

Photos from Anson Flower Farm and Nursery's post 10/09/2021

We still have a lot of pineapple, artichoke, and acorn finials to choose from as our 40% off statuary sale continues this weekend. Finials can be purchased individually or in pairs, with or without pedestals. If you decide to purchase multiple finials and pedestals, we will give you an additional discount. All of our other sales are ongoing or have increased. Perennials, greenhouse plants, and Quick-Fire hydrangeas are 50% off. Ornamental grasses, Rose of Sharon, Yews, Junipers, and rose bushes are 40% off. Ninebark and Spirea are 30% off. Everything else is at a minimum 20% off.

We have three Thundercloud flowering plum trees (along with three smaller Krauter Vesuvius flowering plums not pictured here). These trees are in 20 gallon pots and thus already have a large root system, and are 12-15 feet tall. The Thundercloud looks very similar to the Krauter Vesuvius, although its leaves are slightly darker and it gets up to several feet taller and wider at maturity. Flowering plum trees, or cherry plums, have pink flowers and are one of the first trees to bloom in the spring.
