Spokane Valley Police Department Re-Accredited
Earning the Highest Professional Standards of Policing
The Spokane Valley Police Department (SVPD) has successfully completed a rigorous re-accreditation process that certifies it is operating under best practices and standards for law enforcement. SVPD, a contract agency staffed by Spokane County Sheriff’s Office personnel to provide law enforcement services to the City of Spokane Valley, was the first and only contract police agency to receive Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC) Accreditation in 2011. Since then, SVPD has continued this high level of professionalism, receiving WASPC re-accreditation every four years.
The program is administered by the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs and involves an eight-phase, thorough process over several months of evaluation.
“We are very proud to be re-accredited by WASPC,” said Spokane Valley Police Chief David Ellis. “It illustrates our agency has again achieved the highest professional standards for policing, translating to an extremely high standard of service provided to the City of Spokane Valley citizens.”
The benefits of accreditation include administrative and operational effectiveness, fair recruitment and employment practices, better records management, improved use of technology, health and safety, training, codes of conduct, and prisoner security, among other important law enforcement tasks.
“The Spokane Valley Police Department has worked hard to obtain this achievement,” said Steven Strahan, WASPC executive director. “The community should be proud of their local law enforcement for taking direct and tangible steps to earn the public’s confidence in their operations.”
Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels commented, “Since the City of Spokane Valley Incorporated and contracted with the Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement services, we have and will proudly continue providing a professional and premier level of public safety services the citizens of Spokane Valley deserve.”
The Washington Legislature originally called for the development of standards and goals for law enforcement in 1976.
WASPC was founded in 1963 and represents executive and top management personnel from law enforcement agencies statewide. With more than 900 members, it includes the 39 elected county sheriffs and 240 police chiefs, as well as the Washington State Patrol, the Washington Department of Corrections, and representatives of several federal agencies.

Removing debris helps to clear roadway grates and inlets to reduce flooding, keep streets in good condition and meet water quality standards.
Fall sweeping is not a complete residential sweep but is determined by weather and budget. Areas that experience significant pine needle and deciduous tree drop will be prioritized. While we are unable to share a specific schedule, you can learn more about the program and view a priority map here. https://www.spokanevalleywa.gov/345/Street-Maintenance-Pavement-Preservation
