Does Life Insurance Pay Funeral Expenses?
The answer is… it can… but should it? Life Insurance is intended for many things, including helping to pay on-going family expenses after you pass. Life Insurance typically doesn’t pay out quickly. It is necessary to have access to funds to cover funeral expenses right away. Life Insurance is typically used to replace lost income, pay off debts and taxes associated with an estate as well as other costs such as courts, attorneys and other unexpected bills. Sometimes Life Insurance Policies are not enough to cover these, let alone Funeral Expenses.
According to the National Funeral Directors Association, the median cost of a funeral in 2021 was $9,420.00. This includes the cost of the vault which is an expense required by most cemeteries these days. This can be a significant amount of money for loved ones to put out in an unexpected time of need. If they have to wait for the life insurance company to send in the lump sum check, it could cost more in the end because while you wait… there are “storage” fees accumulating.
And what about that Beneficiary? Once the check comes in the mail, the Beneficiary can (and will) do anything they want to with the money. This may mean you do not get the type of funeral you envision for yourself. No, this doesn’t happen regularly, but it does happen. Money does strange things to people…
The idea of Life Insurance, is leaving money behind for the living. If the living have to use the Life Insurance Funds for all of these inevitable expenses, then you really haven’t left them anything at all. The safest and kindest strategy is to make a plan (and pay for it) ahead of time. Many scoff at this idea while at the same time are carefully creating a will and estate plan. Why stop there?
Family members are often frustrated when having to make arrangements for lost ones during a time of grieving. Siblings don’t always agree on how, where or when and anger boils over. I’ve noticed that the family members whose parents, for example, left a well thought out plan for where they wanted to be buried, how (burial or cremation) and what type of remembrance they would like to have, are simply thankful and relieved. They know their loved one is going to be laid to rest according to a well thought out plan.
Pre-planning is thoughtful, it’s affordable with monthly payments that you can be comfortable with and most of all… will give you and your family peace of mind.

Are Cemeteries “Scary” Places?
Ask the families who spend time in cemeteries. They are not only there to visit loved ones, but they come to exercise, walk the dog, reflect, meditate, and even take senior photos (as I did with my daughter some 10 years ago)! Most reputable cemeteries are well maintained, safe and peaceful. Want to get away from the “noise” of life for a while? Visit a cemetery.
When you visit your local cemetery, take the time to look at the history that is forever enshrined there. You’ll find the historical markers educational and meaningful. Many grave markers tell stories of lives well lived and many tell the story of the area’s groundbreakers, politicians, public servants, and people making important impacts on their communities in their day. The reason the family spent the time and money on telling such stories is so that the legacy of that family member does not go forgotten.
Visit a cemetery. I think you’ll find nothing but comfort there. The friends and family members resting peacefully there are nothing to be afraid or freaked out about. They are at peace; they would want you to be as well.
Let's Make A Plan! Why do families pre-plan cemetery and funeral arrangements? Most families who experience the loss of a loved one breathe a huge sigh of relief when they find out there is a plan alreay in place and all of those "hard" questions have already been answered. In addition, the process can be expensive and those expenses must be paid at the time of death. Most families do not have the cash resources to take care of this. Let's Make A Plan!
The KIRTLAND CUTTER ROCK CHAPEL is a must see when visiting Fairmount Memorial Park! Currently being restored to its former glory, the Rock Chapel was constructed of local Lava Rock and an art glass window back in 1890. The bells have been fixed and are music to the ears.
Why Heritage? From the initial intake and care of your loved one to the chapel service and catered reception, Heritage can guide you each step of the way.
