From customer, Julian:

It was super helpful to see other people’s build list for different ideas, sizes etc.. I actually had the bike built a few months ago, but didn’t want to risk it on icy road. Everything’s finally starting to melt here, so I took it out for a small ride recently. It was really fun going from paved road to snow covered road to muddy grass. NFE kinda just floated above all these different surfaces! It was amazingly easy to climb with this bike too. Anyway, thank you guys again for this awesome bike! Definitely a happy customer here.

Here’s my build list by the way:

Still debating if I want to dump the acorn bag and move on to a swift basket bag. but so far... this bike is the real deal. already has me thinking about selling my road bike; i'm totally sold on the chubby tire, all-road bike deal."

Seattle people: check out these Swift events. They're fun and educational -- if you're thinking about adventuring on a bike, these are super interesting short presentations on bike camping by normal people. The Stoke Spoke events are the only ones that Elephant Bikes officially sponsor.

Report: Doshi coffee ride Normally I do my first century of the month on the first Saturday of the month, but not this month. I only found time for a half day ride on my new Elephant Bikes National Forest Explorer (NFE) after my son and I built it up. It was still missing the mud guards. Then I left on a trip abroad for almo…

Joe's NFE. He says:
"My son Shintaro (pictured on my NFE) and I had a very busy day yesterday, but now the build is almost finished, with these exceptions:
1) I still need to have the 58 mm Honjo fenders ("SimWorks by Honjo Turtle 58") installed and
2) the 113 mm square taper BB recommended by Spa Cycles for their Touring Triple crank set turn out to be too short for the FD to drop the chain onto the inner ring, so right now I'm running the triple as a double.

Here is my setup:

NFE stock frame and fork, size S
Haulin' Colin porteur rack (NFE green)

Shimano 5703 shifters (silver)
Alpina-d FD

Ultegra 6700 RD (10 speed)
Ultegra 6700 12-30 cassette
Ultegra CN-6600 chain
Spa Cycles Touring triple crank (46-34-24, silver)
Shimano UN55 68x113 mm square taper BB (too short!)
Shimano PD-M530 pedals

TRP Spyre SLC (silver)
Shimano 160 mm rotors
Shimano M-System brake housing
Swiss Stop 15s pads (not installed yet)

Tange Seiki DX4 head set
Dimension threadless stem, 00 mm, silver
Nitto Randonneur handlebar, 450 mm
Nitto S65 seatpost, 27.2 mm x 300 mm
Brooks B17

Custom wheels built by GS Astuto:
- Velocity Blunt SL 27.5 rims, 32H

- White Industries CLD disk brake rear hub

Tioga QR skewer set, 100/135 mm, silver
Compass Babyshoe Pass EL (650B x 42)
Schwalbe SV-12 tubes

Today I did an 87 km test ride in suburban and central Tokyo. I love the comfortable ride and how the bike handles. I no longer worry about bad road surfaces now. I love how it looks too.

The acid test for me and my bike will come on February 27, when I'll ride a very hilly 200 km brevet in Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka. Wish me luck!"
