"In August, I had both a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction. I was blessed that my pathology came back with results that the cancer was exactly what it was supposed to be, where it was supposed to be, and margins and lymph node were clear. I would not need chemo, radiation or estrogen blockers. It really was the best news I could have received in terms of my long term treatment and prognosis.

The majority of my recovery has passed and I am now mentally processing the experience overall. Let me first explain that I was an early bloomer and relatively large dense breasted my whole life. A reduction has been on my Christmas list since I was 16! While many women struggle with the idea of losing one of our feminine identities, I did not. I even considered not having reconstruction. After much thought though, I was very thankful to have the option to have a breast reconstruction and pursued it.

I chose to have a DIEP breast reconstruction two weeks after my mastectomy. I will not lie that it was a difficult recovery process between the two surgeries. A particular emotion I had to process was that unlike many surgeries, I was not in pain before this surgery, seeking comfort through a medical procedure. I was living a very active life. To go through this pain, emotionally and physically without a direct attachment to something I was feeling, was difficult. While extremely grateful to not need chemo, radiation or estrogen blockers, it left me to ponder not feeling like a 'breast cancer survivor' and having survivor's guilt. These aren't bad things to feel. They are the reality of the journey and just something I had to work through for myself.

There is a process post mastectomy and breast reconstruction of reconnecting with your body. To some degree, cancer seems like is your body betraying you. Breast reconstruction is a major revision of your body internally and externally. Not only do internal nerves and tissue need to reconnect, my brain needed to connect both physically and mentally to my new shape. So this is a new place for me, falling in love my breasts. I am grateful to be here."

Her large breasts interfered with her life, and she desired a smaller, perkier breast that matched her active lifestyle.

She underwent a breast reduction where 380 g was removed from the right and 295g was removed from the left.

Bethany's story...

Hi my name is Bethany Kuska, I'm a brca1 gene mutation carrier and I'm 35 years old. One year ago I embarked on my journey to do a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy with diep reconstruction. I'm a registered nurse, mom of 3, I enjoy traveling, doing outdoor activities and sports so having a reconstruction that allowed me to be active still was very important to me

Cancer sucks and unfortunately I have a prominent family history on both sides of my family. My mom is a breast cancer survivor and was diagnosed at the young age of 36. My dad, who is actually the brca1 carrier, is currently undergoing treatment for two different kinds of cancer.

After doing two years of preventative screening for breast/ovarian cancer, I decided to do risk reducing surgery. This was a very difficult decision to remove healthy body parts. The uncertainty of not knowing what I'd look like or how I would feel afterwards was scary, but yet the 85% chance of cancer never left my mind. I was blessed to have found Dr. Oliver to do my reconstruction. He is the most patient, kind, talented doctor.

He stuck with me even through complications from the mastectomy and gave me a fantastic reconstruction. It is extremely important to have a surgeon that you can trust with this major surgery and I 100% trusted Dr. Oliver and his team. I'm a huge advocate for everyone who goes through a mastectomy to feel whole again and have the option of breast reconstruction.

I can't say enough how thankful I am for Dr. Oliver and everyone at Plastic Surgery Northwest for giving me this opportunity and can definitely say I truly have no regrets.
