What does Jesus mean when He calls Himself the "bread of life?" 🧐

Let's open our Bibles for the answer!! 🔎 🔎 🔎

📖 God delivered His people from Egypt and led them toward the promised land... through the desert... and they were afraid. Then God said "I will rain bread from heaven for you." God did not let His people starve (Exodus 16).
📖 Jesus saw 5,000 hungry people and miraculously provided them with bread from only 5 loaves. The people remembered that God gave their ancestors bread from heaven—would Jesus give them bread for a lifetime too? (John 6:1-15).
📖 Jesus explained that the true bread from heaven was not physical bread, but Himself. He was God's true provision to the world (John 6:25-33).
📖 At the last passover with His disciples, Jesus broke bread and told them "this is my body given for you." Like bread gives physical life, Jesus gives eternal life (Luke 22:19).

The Bible reveals one story. Spiritually hungry people find life and satisfaction only in the "bread" provided by God: Jesus Christ 🙌🏽 🙌🏽 🙌🏽

Why did John call Jesus "the Word?" 🧐

In these opening verses, John did not mention Jesus' name but referred to Jesus with the Greek word Logos, translated here as "the Word." This term occurs four times in the first 18 verses!

The word Logos incorporates far more layers of meaning than can be captured in a single word.
🔍 In ancient Greek mythology, Logos indicated the "First Cause"—an intelligent, divine, but unknown power behind the universe.
🔍 In Judaism, God's "Word" represents the dynamic power of His will. He speaks and it is done.
🔍 Throughout Scripture, God's word refers back to the creation story. Psalm 33:6 reads, "By the power of the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth."

These are all clues that help us understand John's meaning. John earnestly wants us to know that Jesus is no mere man. With beautiful artistry, John affirm's Jesus' deity before he tells us one thing Jesus said or did on earth. John fittingly used "the Word" that signified ultimate wisdom to describe the superior glory of God the Son. 🌟

Betrayal inflicts a uniquely sharp and painful wound. 💔

Like Hosea, God is no stranger to betrayal. The Israelites repeatedly turned from God to idols, though He loved and chose them as His own people. Sadly, we are much like the Israelites and Hosea’s unfaithful wife – prone to wander into sin. Times of grief, turmoil, or temptation can cause our eyes and hearts to turn away from God.

✨ Yet God remains faithful despite our waywardness. God relentlessly pursues wayward people. He stubbornly holds fast to His children — always seeking to bring them back to Himself. ✨

God not only judges sin, but He also repairs sin’s damage. God delights to bring good from hardship. He seeks to bring beauty from ashes and joy from sorrow. 🌷🌷🌷

God jealously guards the welfare of His people. Like a surgeon who cuts to heal, God will not withhold pain from our lives if that pain accomplishes His good purposes. God’s people in all ages have found comfort in the words recorded in Joel 2:25: “I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten....”

How many people look back sorrowfully on years lived without regard to God? God’s restorative grace brings fruitfulness to formerly barren places in a believer’s life. If your heart laments wasted years, lay hold of this promise today. ❤️
