It’s “Way Back When-sday,” when we take a stroll down memory lane in downtown Spokane! Every Wednesday, we're sharing historic photos and fascinating facts uncovering the hidden gems of our city’s past.

Originally founded in 1883 as Central School, this famous Spokane high school has evolved into a landmark of south western Spokane. Today, the school looks a bit different than when it was first constructed.

After the original South Central High School was destroyed by fire in 1910, a new Collegiate Gothic Style building, designed by architect L.L. Rand, was constructed on the same site.

The school is renowned for its architectural beauty, featuring a clock tower, a restored central theater, and artwork from past graduates. It remains a vital community hub, hosting events and serving as the largest high school in the district, with around two thousand students and several notable alumni.

Can you guess which high school this is? ⬇️

It’s “Way Back When-sday,” when we take a stroll down memory lane in downtown Spokane! Every Wednesday, we're sharing historic photos and fascinating facts uncovering the hidden gems of our city’s past.

The Monroe Street Bridge in Spokane has a rich history, beginning with its first wooden structure designed for horses and wagons.

Rebuilt in steel in 1890, the bridge quickly became unsafe, leading to its replacement in 1911 with a grand concrete arch bridge, the largest in the world at the time. Designed by prominent local architects, the new bridge faced significant construction challenges, including severe weather and tragic accidents.

Although its beauty was marred by a railroad bridge in 1914, the Monroe Street Bridge was restored to its original grandeur during a 2003-2005 reconstruction, preserving its historical design elements and solidifying its place as a Spokane landmark.

It’s “Way Back Wednesday,” when we take a stroll down memory lane in downtown Spokane! Every Wednesday, we're sharing historic photos and fascinating facts uncovering the hidden gems of our city’s past.

Nestled among a grotto of basalt columns stands one of the most unlikely attractions from Riverfront Park’s history—the “Garbage Goat.”

Created by Sister Paula Turnbull, a local nun and prominent figure in the local arts scene, the Garbage Goat might seem like an unlikely source of controversy, but it sparked one of the most peculiar and persistent debates during Expo '74.

This steel goat illuminated the underlying tensions of the fair’s themes and revealed the attitudes of both Spokanites and visitors, serving as a symbolic lens for understanding the world’s fair.

Our Story

A Comprehensive Downtown Revitalization Program:

Downtown Spokane Partnership (DSP)
The DSP is a private, non-profit membership organization that serves as Spokane's central city advocate and service provider, dedicated to enhancing the quality and vitality of Downtown Spokane as the basis for a healthy region. The DSP accomplishes its mission through advocating for public policies, business and project development, quality planning, physical improvement projects, public safety, beautification, and marketing programs that ensure Downtown's continued success. The DSP implements a comprehensive set of action items to strengthen Downtown Spokane as a place to live, work, and invest.

Downtown Spokane Business Improvement District (BID)
The BID was created by Spokane City Council in July 1995 and reauthorized in 2001 at the request of the area's business and property owners. The City of Spokane hires the DSP to administer the BID on the City's behalf to deliver enhanced services including clean, safe, promotions, and parking in order to make Downtown a more attractive place to visit, shop, and invest. Comprising approximately 80 blocks of the Central Business District, the BID boundaries are generally Maple to Browne, and the Railroad Viaduct to North River Drive. More than 900 businesses and 425 property owners are contained within the area. Special assessments of over $1,000,000 from within the BID fund activities, programs, and management. Property assessments are based on land and improvement values and businesses are assessed based upon square footage, use, and location.

The BID maintains a pedestrian-friendly environment that provides clean, safe, and well-managed public spaces to enhance business activities and promote the whole Downtown experience. The BID encourages investment by providing the revenue and political will to keep commercial streets clean, safe, and economically vibrant. While the BID’s primary role is to fund and implement Enhanced Public Services, it is a critical component of the overall Downtown revitalization.
