A recent report revealed an interesting trend of individuals relocating to regions in America that are increasingly vulnerable to wildfires, floods, and extreme heat. Despite the escalating frequency and severity of these hazards, migration to at-risk areas is on the rise.

In 2023, high-fire-risk counties in the United States experienced a net influx of 63,365 individuals. Texas observed a significant portion of this migration. However, the situation varies across states; in California’s high-fire-risk regions, more people departed than arrived.

Conversely, counties facing high flood risks witnessed a net migration of 16,144 individuals. Florida accounted for a considerable portion of this relocation to flood-prone areas, although to a lesser extent than in 2022. This trend hints at an increasing sensitivity to flood risks among residents of the Sunshine State.

In July, significant job growth was observed in 3 key sectors. One of them being construction, with 25,000 jobs, showcasing a favorable development for the housing industry.

Upon closer examination, the residential construction segment saw a notable increase of 31,700 jobs on a monthly basis, while residential specialty trade contractors experienced a rise of 7,400 jobs compared to the previous month. Over the past year, the construction sector has consistently added an average of 19,000 jobs per month.

Overall, this is a positive sign for housing as builders continue to work and add supply to the ongoing shortage.
