Launch Update - We are going! 40 minutes away from local astronaut Butch Wilmore and fellow astronaut Suni Williams performing the first crewed flight of Boeing’s Starliner to the International Space Station. This is only the sixth time ever that a US crew has flown a new human rated capsule to space and it is commanded by a Mt Juliet, TN native!
Launch Update on local astronaut Butch Wilmore’s launch - after reviewing the issues encountered yesterday, NASA has decided not to attempt a launch today to give engineers more time to review the problem with the ground launch sequencer.
There are three redundant sets of computers that make up the ground launch sequencer. Together they automatically control many things on the pad, including firing explosive bolts that hold the rocket to the launch pad until it is ready for lift-off. All three sets of computers must be in sync for the countdown to proceed. Yesterday, one of the three took longer than expected to sync and as a result triggered an automatic hold of the countdown that quickly turned into a scrub of yesterdays mission.
The next launch Wednesday is 9:52AM CDT.
Local astronaut, Butch Wilmore, of Mt Juliet, TN is about to launch to the International Space Station as the Commander of the first crewed flight of the Boeing Starliner! Tune in on NASA TV at https://www.nasa.gov/nasatv/

What is Gateway?
Gateway is a center of inspiration. Gateway is a jumping off point to unlocking the potential of the youth that participate in the program. Gateway is an interactive STEM experience that leverages the past, present, and future achievements of the space program as the basis for our program.
Anyone that was around on May 5, 1961 remembers Alan Shepherds suborbital flight, making him the first American in space. July 20, 1969, we were inspired by "One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind" as Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon. April 12, 1981 we again watched in awe as John Young and Robert Crippen launched the first Space Shuttle Mission and landed like an airplane two days later. In 1991, the Hubble Space Telescope launched and has inspired awe since. February 3, 1994, Robert "Hoot" Gibson launched on the first Shuttle mission to the Russian space station, Mir and in doing so, extended the hand shake that ended the Cold War. Throughout its history, the space program has served as a source of inspiration and innovation.
The goal of Gateway is to offer a source of inspiration to youth. Inspire them with stories and hands on experiences about the history of the space program. They will learn of its challenges, accomplishments, and the benefits we all enjoy today that resulted from the space program. Youth will learn of the exciting events of the space program today-driven by groups such as NASA, Space-X, Boeing, and Blue Origin. Most importantly, youth will learn the role that they can actively play in the future as we look to return to the moon, venture to Mars, and in all of it improve and better appreciate the life that we have on earth.
Just as the lunar space station, Gateway, is to be the jumping off point for the Moon and Mars; Gateway STEM Center will serve as the jumping off point for the youth who participate in our programs to be inspired about the possibilities for their future!
