IMPORTANT NEWS:

Here's a quick update on the IT chaos that unfolded overnight.

A major EDR vendor, CrowdStrike, issued a security signature update that caused Windows devices to continuously crash and show the blue screen of death. This update disrupted businesses, banks, airlines, media outlets, and emergency services globally.

Key Points:

- Microsoft 365 was impacted, but reports a positive trend in service availability.
- However, there's no global fix yet. Each machine needs to be manually addressed.
- JMARK doesn't use this vendor, but some of our clients' vendors do, leading to significant outages.
- George Kurtz, CrowdStrike CEO, has said the issue has been “identified, isolated, and a fix has been deployed.”

For end users:

- You didn't cause this issue. It was the update.
- Companies impacted should talk to their IT/MSP.
- At JMARK, we’ve already communicated with clients indirectly affected by this.
- They’ll need to go through the manual steps needed to apply the fix.
- Patience is crucial as vendors must address each system step-by-step.

Looking ahead:

Ensure your business continuity plan (BCP) can handle disruptions from critical vendor outages or internal tech failures. Can you switch to manual processes if needed?

Communicate with CrowdStrike representatives through official channels to avoid phishing attempts related to this incident. Ensure you get the patch and steps from official CrowdStrike sources to avoid malware.

Most importantly, remember that incidents like this happen. While they're not fun, it's the nature of technology. So please be patient with your vendors. They're working as hard (and as fast) as they can.
