Thank you to all who served.

“Honor to the Soldier, and Sailor everywhere, who bravely bears his country’s cause. Honor also to the citizen who cares for his brother in the field, and serves, as best he can, the same cause—honor to him, less only than to him, who braves, for the common good, the storms of heaven and the storms of battle.” —Abraham Lincoln

Know the signs

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO SPOT COLIC IN HORSES?

Colic is not a disease; it is merely a symptom of disease. Specifically, colic indicates a painful problem in the horse's abdomen (belly), which can be caused by a number of different conditions. Less than 10% of all colic cases are severe enough to require surgery or cause the death of the horse; nevertheless, every case of colic should be taken seriously because it can be difficult to tell the mild ones from the potentially serious ones in the early stages.

Horses show signs of abdominal pain in a wide variety of ways, and usually a horse shows only a few of the signs during an episode of colic. The rule of thumb is—the more obvious the signs of pain, the more serious the problem.

If you suspect the horse is suffering from colic, we suggest that you:
• Alert your veterinarian immediately.
• Remove all hay and grain from the horse's surroundings.
• Don't medicate without your veterinarian's approval, as pain medications can mask clinical signs;
• Walk the horse around if it's continually rolling or in danger of hurting itself—but do not tire the horse with relentless walking and don't approach the animal if it's not safe.
• Keep the horse under close observation until the signs of colic resolve or the veterinarian arrives.

The key to increasing the chances of a good outcome is to identify the problem early and get your veterinarian involved from the start. Consult your horse doctor for more information and be sure to ask them how they can be reached if your horse colics after hours!

Merry Christmas from everyone at HCI. May your day be filled with enough love, laughter, and merriment to keep your heart full year round

11/11/2022

As you may already be aware, the second phase of renovations and repairs is underway at the renowned Coliseum at the Illinois State Fairgrounds through April 2023. As a valued attendee, you know how integral this building is to the success
of the Illinois Horse fair, hosting clinics, demonstrations, and entertainment throughout the weekend. With the Coliseum closed, Horsemen's Council of Illinois has made the difficult decision to postpone the Illinois Horse Fair until 2024.

However, as the saying goes, when one door closes, another one opens. HCI is excited to announce we will host two nights of rodeo on April 28-29, 2023, and the Fairgrounds Showdown Youth Speed Challenge on April 29-30, 2023, at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds in DuQuoin, Illinois. This new event will also host a small number of vendors as well.

As Illinois’ largest all-breed, multi-discipline equestrian event, the Illinois Horse Fair historically featured a wide variety of educational events, including seminars, mounted clinics, and breed demonstrations. With something for everyone, entertainment has included mounted drill teams, trick riding, mounted shooting, and rodeos. Additionally, Illinois Horse Fair features the state’s largest equine-related trade show, covering nearly 94,000 square feet, offering everything for horse, rider, farm, and home.

This premiere event has served as the primary fundraiser for HCI for more than thirty years. “We look forward to bringing the Illinois Horse Fair back in 2024 to delight horse enthusiasts of all ages and disciplines,” stated HCI president Paula Briney.
Horsemen's Council of Illinois is a non-profit association serving Illinois' diverse equine community through legislative representation, education, and advocacy. HCI is affiliated with the American Horse Council, the industry's national lobbying and trade association based in Washington, D.C. HCI is the only horse association in Illinois that represents all breeds, all disciplines, and every type of horse-related enterprise throughout the state.

Please watch for more information as it becomes finalized. Please feel free
to reach out to us at any time with your questions at [email protected].
HCI and Illinois Horse Fair greatly appreciate your support throughout the years and look seeing you at this new and exciting event and in 2024!
