The Riverside Branch Library is officially OPEN! This isn't your average library – it's a knowledge powerhouse and a creativity zone all rolled into one! But most importantly, it's a place to connect with your community.

This ribbon cutting is special to us because it's the last grand opening of the 34 libraries we've helped design and watch come to life over the last 6 years for Mid-Continent Public Library. Sapp Design Architects are incredibly grateful to have taken part in such a monumental series of projects and could not have done it without our amazing partners and collaborators: Mid-Continent Public Library, Helix Architecture + Design, JE Dunn Construction, True Engineering Group, and Olsson.

This week our team Bonnie Crawford and Brad McKenzie attended the Building Excellence Awards in Kansas City, hosted by the heartland chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America. R.E. Smith nominated Monett Middle School in the category of GC/CM projects between $10 and $25M. We are honored to be recognized as a top-three finalist!

We are beyond thrilled to announce the GRAND OPENING of the East Independent Branch Library! This isn't just a library—it's a vibrant hub of knowledge, creativity, and community spirit!

This State-of-the-Art facility is located on a triangulated site, two sides with heavy traffic flow and the other a lush forest of trees and greenery. The Library starts with a concept focused on a lantern, an opportunity to play with glazing and control light between the interior and exterior – day or night. As this concept idea progressed, it was important that the inspiration not impose on the “traditional” library but rather optimize and enhance it through site layout, building approach, street presence, and community experience.

As one approaches the building, the patron is welcomed with a double-height glass facade that glows from within. The North wall is designed with a louver system that balances glow with shadow definitions for added depth and wraps around the entry forming a canopy. The North facade peels away from the bottom towards the West to allow natural light into specific programs, such as a children’s area. High-efficient glass and sun studies assist in book preservation and thermal comfort. The natural warm wood tones reference the trees and forest beyond, while its double height simultaneously functions as a roof screen for unsightly mechanical equipment.

Given the property’s nature and its relationship to the adjacent Intersection, the NE corner of the building needed to remain prominent while balancing the entrance location. Inside, the entry is fused to a central spine adjusted diagonally within the building, leading the patrons to the center of the floor plan. From the tall vestibule, the eye is led directly through the building to a west-facing glass facade showcasing the woodland. The circulation spine allows the patron to see the entirety of the floor plan to decide which area of the library best suits their needs.

This project was done in collaboration with Helix Architecture, JE Dunn, True Engineering and Olsson.

When crafting school designs, we view every inch as an opportunity for creativity and innovation. We're all about maximizing usability. That means integrating adaptable, multi-purpose zones wherever possible. We think outside the box, transforming corridors, staircases, and classroom nooks into dynamic student-centered educational hubs to enhance the diversity of spaces.

Functionality is key. That's why we're big fans of working walls, corridors and learning stairs that can be used for different learning scenarios. These features include writable and magnetic surfaces, blending movement and display elements into the design, and choice-environment furnishings that are inviting to students.

Immerse yourself in these examples: In one corridor, we've created a cozy "front porch" learning area. It offers students and teachers an alternative space for teaching and learning with opportunities for student supervision from several vantage points. Then, there's the transformed stairway – now a series of learning steps. Here, students can read, study, or even serve as an audience for teaching sessions. In summary, MUST-HAVES for INNOVATIVE LEARNING is active-spaces, making them multifunctional, and giving the students and facility more choice and adaptability.

Exciting News! Today was the groundbreaking ceremony for Reed Academy! We are proud to be a part of this project and look forward to seeing it come to life! The project aims to construct an approximate 130,000 sf new middle school that embodies the spirit of the performing arts and serves as the vibrant heartbeat of the neighborhood.
