Furthermore, Kari Bedford Photography will always be a "brave space" -- where asking questions and working on our growth as a community comprised of imperfect people is welcomed and encouraged.

Hate has no place here -- and hate can come in the form of a "warning" from your local officials about potential riots. It is hate in genteel, well-meaning wolf's clothing -- but it is hate nonetheless.

Do not give in to the racist depictions of your fellow citizens.
There is no violence, destruction of property nor looting.
There are no riots. There is and has been only an outpouring of support for Sonya Massey's family in their time of sorrow, as there should be.

This Sunday from 5:30-7:30 Me and 1221 Photography will be doing shoots on Adams street to help everyone involved and affected by the fires. We will set up a couple different couches) and chairs th to be used for different looks $50 minimum(but please please donate what you feel)for 5 images! ALL PROCEEDS GO TO ADAMS STREET!! There will be a QR code the day of to scan and donate.
So come meet us down by the train tracks on Adams, right by JP Kelly’s!!! AND JP Kelly’s will be opening up for our event! Come grab a drink or she will provide waters to beat the heat!!!

On Thursday night from 5 PM to 9 PM, Patrick Russell and I will be creating beautiful portraits in my studio for a very good cause: providing relief to residents who lost their homes in the fires on Adams Street. Check my page for event details or send me a message if you have questions! Hope to see as many people there as possible to provide as much relief to families as we can.

The urgency behind this fundraiser just got real.

There has been a great deal of enthusiasm, momentum, and generosity to aid the victims of the fire on Adams Street.

However, it appears that the city of Springfield is doing very little to assist the residents who were displaced from their homes by the fires.

Not to put too fine a point on it, one of our friends lived in one of the buildings that is likely going to be demolished this week.

Even if it is not demolished, this family will not be able to return to their home any time soon. They have been locked out of their building for safety reasons — and are presently moving from hotel to hotel, with just a handful of personal belongings.

Therefore, the vast majority of the funds that we raise will be going to anyone who is currently experiencing homelessness as a result of this crisis. There is at least one GoFundMe — and likely more on the way.

If you are able to attend this event, please do. We will be taking photos and donations from 5 PM to 9 PM on Thursday.

If you can’t join us but would still like to donate, please feel free to reach out or simply Venmo me (-bedford) directly if that’s easier (and if you are comfortable doing that).

Our goal is to assist with as much direct aid as possible — as QUICKLY as possible.

I have been overwhelmed by the number of people who have reached out wanting to help in one way or another. Thank you, friends!

Please share and help us help our Adams Family friends who were affected by last night's fire.

Literally a handful of minutes before going into 4 hours of back-to-back headshots, my phone lit up with text messages from my daughters. One block due north of my studio, a section of Adams family was ablaze. My children both work downtown. Their dad works downtown. My studio is downtown. Our friends live and work and own businesses downtown. My heart sank.

Downtown Springfield struggled through the pandemic and has not yet fully recovered. It is already in a constant state of flux: changing storefronts, owners, construction, big and little efforts to draw locals and tourists alike.

What downtown did not need was a fire.

I drove to the studio after my headshot gig to unload my gear. Walked over to Adams and snapped a few meager, stupid little photos of the aftermath. Emergency personnel were still hard at work. Folks were gathered outside of Buzzbomb. It was oddly serene.

No one was killed in the fires and that is nothing short of a miracle (one afforded by the emergency personnel who risked their lives). But so much was lost or displaced — including the entire “Pillsburied” exhibit: the most soulful, living, breathing collective effort I have ever witnessed in our little town.

We make things in the spirit of tradition, but also impermanence. I keep reminding myself that nothing is permanent. But man, ain’t life a kick in the teeth sometimes?

I want to hug downtown Springfield. I’m glad it wasn’t worse, but I’m terribly sad for the families and kitties and businesses affected. I miss the artwork already. I hope we rebuild quickly. I hope more art rises from the ashes of the ashes and the ghosts of the Pillsbury plant. 🖤💔🖤
