1st Ultramarathon completed yesterday. Amazing experience and epic event at McKenzie River Trail 50k. Looking forward to a summer of hard training and fast racing.

Something strange happened to me today. I finished the Masters mile race in Portland and immediately saw my training buddy and told him something…Usually when I finish a mile or 800m race I get heavy legs, chest tightness a wheezy air hunger feeling, and when I cross the line at times I’ll have hands on knees. Sometimes vertigo, a headache with dry throat and maybe a cough which is all good and means I emptied the tank. That’s kinda how I felt 3 weeks ago at Hayward Classic mile with a 4:43. But I put in serious work the past 3 weeks….so Today when I crossed the line I felt…nothing but joy. Which is great and that is why I told my buddy at the finish, “I could have gone faster”. Mahalo to my amazing training partners for the love and the push. I had the amazing 55years young legend, Cush, on my heels chasing an American record which made me nervous. He got 95% AG with a 4:39 and I got 4:37 FTW which is 89.9%. Now for a taper week before the McKenzie River Trail Run 50k next Saturday 🤙🏽

Great event last night at the Lake Nona 5k. I was feeling nauseous I guess from the heat in the 80s and real feel was 88. I’ve been just doing mostly slow aerobic building up to my first ultra, a 50k in 3 weeks. I did not have much expectation coming in but after a first mile of 531 into the wind I was surprisingly feeling good. Mile 2 had a little tailwind and I clocked a 518 and was in 2nd place overall and figured I need to hold this pace as I entered the pain cave of mile 3. Mile 3 was in the 520s and then I hammered the last 0.1 mile in 500 flat pace. Overall very happy with the effort and the results since it’s my fastest Florida 5k in the Heat! 🔥

Savor each moment and even the sweet joy of suffering. The good, the bad and the ups and downs is what makes the journey so special & profound. Sometimes you have a breakthrough and sometimes you just have to get through, and grind to the finish. Today was definitely a grind to the finish and a focus on the process. So appreciative of the Eugene running community. The countless “let’s go OG!” Was really special and most definitely motivated me to dig deeper. Thank you. Congrats to all the runners who raced this weekend. Up next 800m at Hayward Classic, a masters mile, McKenzie 50k!

Excited for this event…I hope to see you out there enjoying the moment and basking in the pleasure of sweet suffering.

Great long run with Lonn’s group. There is nothing like having your first ultramarathon on the calendar 🗓️ June 10th McKenzie River Trail Run 50k to motivate you to increase your mileage. I’m also hoping to run a nice 1/2 marathon in a few weeks. So far the runs, weights, friendships and 25 years of plant powered nutrition are keeping me healthy & strong 💪🏽

Nice race last weekend in Orlando. Best Damn Race in fact. Back to back weekends running a 1730s in the Heat and humidity, 1st overall & 3rd overall. Got some work to do before breaking 1700 minutes again…hopefully by May 1630 in 5k and 1:59.9 in 800m at Hayward Field

Last Saturday I raced the Inua 5k at the spur of the moment. I had caught a red eye and forgot to pack my running shorts and running socks. I rushed to the race the next morning prairie doggin…I stepped to the line with swimming trunks and dress socks and no sense of pace with my Apple Watch. Luckily I did pack my v***r flys as you can see in photo… It was very hot and I thought I was maybe holding 600 flat pace case a 12 yo girl led the race up until halfway point. I picked up the pace and to my surprise was 1st place overall with negative splits and 538 ave pace. Tomorrow I race the Best Damn Race and hope to be 1st masters since there will likely be stiff competition in the open race.
