Charlemagne was wise to observe  that, “to have another language is to possess a second soul”. Whether by practice of language, of medicine, or both in confluence with one another…we must do what we can to make the world smaller - less insurmountable - for everyone.

Gregory Spencer, MBA
DOCARE Volunteer

Everyone has something to share on a DOCARE trip. Volunteers work tirelessly in set-up, triage and intake, and in the pharmacy. Some volunteers are bilingual and are vital to ensuring communication between the clinic patrons and the clinicians, serving as translators, as Greg did in Peru. 🇵🇪

Effective communication is a vital part of the DOCARE mission. Translators native to the country are often hired to ensure safe, quality care and education is provided.

I learned about DOCARE many years ago while renewing my AOA membership dues, and it was listed as a voluntary donation.  After investigating, I realized the DOCARE mission statement mirrored my own beliefs, yet I felt I had little to contribute aside from a donation, as I am a radiologist. Portable ultrasound then became available and my international work began.  I serve annually on several recurrent locations across Latin America.  I also volunteer on the DOCARE finance and membership committees.  Without a doubt, though, one of the best parts for me, is seeing the spark in the students and residents and being a part of their education.

🇵🇪🇲🇽

I will never forget a young woman being carried in to the remote clinic in excruciating abdominal pain.  Ultrasound demonstrated twins, however one was outside of the uterus.  Urgent surgery proved lifesaving, which was arranged by the local community leader on site.

🩺👨‍⚕️🩻

Portable diagnotic equipment used by DOCARE enhances the quality of care provided, but their purchase for use is only possible through your support. An ultrasound machine with probes costs $8000. A $100 donation could help finance additional equipment for use in DOCARE Clinics.

My name is Robert Marino and I am currently a 2nd year medical student at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM). My time in Peru stands out as one of the most enriching experiences I’ve ever had. We established a clinic in the underserved area of Iquitos, Peru, offering healthcare to those who couldn’t access it otherwise. Subsequently, we journeyed along the Amazon River delivering medical care to different tribes living within the Amazon rainforest. Their culture was captivating and unlike anything I had ever encountered before. It involved festivities such as the ritual of knocking fruit off a tree, tribal dances, and unique culinary traditions. This taught me the importance of tailoring healthcare to different cultures, emphasizing the need for treatment aligning with that person’s values.

I am immensely satisfied with the impact we made on our patients’ lives. One example of this is my first ever pediatrics patient gave me a drawing she made. I carry her artwork in my wallet as a constant reminder of the positive impact I can have on others.

I highly recommend DOCARE trips to broaden one’s perspective on life, to foster cultural understanding, and develop a global mindset.

Consider supporting DOCARE as we continue to work with populations in need. A donation of just $100 can provide prenatal vitamins for up to 17 pregnancies. Help us reach our goal of raising $30,000 before the end of the 2023!

“My interest in international work started long ago, with service trips in college. Upon entering medical school, I had the opportunity to serve on a new level. West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine developed a DOCARE student chapter, and I have remained active, even now participating as an attending. DOCARE means the opportunity to show the most underserved that they matter. I enjoy collaborating and learning from the physicians and medical students on these trips who all share the same passion for outreach. Most recently on a DOCARE trip to Peru, gastrointestinal disease was life altering and extremely prevalent. Please consider a donation so we can continue to serve in our continuity clinics.”

“I have been working with DOCARE in both the Dominican Republic and Peru since I was an internal medicine resident. My residency program was able to provide some funding as well as dedicated time off of scheduled rotations for international work.

Now I work as an infectious diseases physician, but on short term trips, primary care remains a priority.

Access to preventive screenings such as Pap smears, STI testing, and prenatal counseling are some of the services our clinicians and students provide.

A Pap smear kit costs just $12! A donation of $50 provides at least 4 women access to cervical cancer screening. A donation of $12 a day through 12/31/23 is just $132 and will supply at least 11 kits!”

“I completed my first DOCARE trip as a first-year medical student in 2016 and it was life changing! I saw firsthand the impact DOCARE International was able to have in the Guatemalan Community in which I served. DOCARE helped me find my passion for working with underserved communities. I have since returned to Guatemala 5 more times to provide healthcare. The donations made to DOCARE International were used to purchase medications like anti-parasitics. A donation of just $50 can provide anti-parasite medication for more than 350 kids.”
