Operators of a Roseville grass-cutting and landscaping company are pleased with the work of Warren police in nabbing a suspect police believe to be responsible for the theft of its lawn equipment who may have committed at least one similar crime.
The arrest occurred Friday after Warren officers in early April began investigating the case of a suspect parking a pickup truck next to another containing lawn equipment and stealing several pieces of motorized devices, police said Monday in a news release.
Warren investigators then identified the suspect vehicle “using several pieces of evidence and other law enforcement investigative techniques,” they said.
Members of the Special Operations Unit last Thursday conducted surveillance and discovered the suspect vehicle in the area, police said. Officers watched the driver parking the pickup truck in a church parking lot on 14 Mile Road in Sterling Heights, where Grasshopper Lawn Maintenance workers were cutting grass.
Warren officers said they witnessed Brent Alvyn Glass exit his vehicle, take two backpack leaf blowers from the work truck and drive away. They followed the truck and performed a traffic stop on Groesbeck Highway in Warren. Officers found the two leaf blowers, burglary tools and possibly other stolen lawn equipment, they reported.
Officers quickly processed the two leaf blowers as evidence and returned them to the company the same day, to the delight of Grasshopper Lawn Maintenance employees.
Grasshopper employee Adriennce Bologna said she and her colleagues were pleasantly surprised with the arrest and quick return of the equipment.
“We’re definitely thankful they were able to catch him in the act and apprehend him,” Bologna said. “We have had equipment stolen before, unfortunately, and haven’t gotten it back.”
The suspect, Glass, 48, of Detroit, was arraigned Friday on charges in two cases. In all, he is charged with receiving and concealing stolen property, third offense, possession of burglary tools, larceny between $1,000 and $20,0000, and two counts of driving with a suspended license in 37th District Court in Warren for two incidents this month.
Glass has 10 prior felony convictions dating back to the early 2000s for larceny and other theft-related offenses, police said, and is charged as a fourth habitual criminal.
The receiving-and-concealing and burglary-tools charges are each punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
It appears Glass posted 10% of a $25,000 bond set by visiting Judge Russell Ethridge and faces a May 9 probable cause conference in front of Judge John Chmura.
