For Salvation Army Construction Manager Terry Tyson, leaving a 25-year career in mortgage banking and real estate investment turned out to be an immensely rewarding decision. He was looking for an opportunity that reignited a spark in him. His grant-funded role with The Salvation Army has allowed him to help restore homes affected by the 2022 flood in the greater St. Louis area, returning those homes to safe, sanitary and secure conditions.

“I’ve been able to use my skills in construction and every single home I’ve touched through this work has been impactful. When I got into this role in 2024, the flood waters were long gone. But the list of homes affected was long and even with multiple organizations helping, there was still a lot of work to be done. One woman and her children had been displaced from their basement for over two years. There is such a need in our community and there are just as many people struggling with a job and a home as people without a home and living on the street. Someone might own or rent their home, but still not have the funds to make needed repairs.”

Terry learned many lessons from his late father, who owned the oldest minority contracting firm in Kansas City, which still operates today. The biggest lesson, however, was integrity. “If you do a good job the first time, you don’t have to go back and fix it later. That’s a lot of what we’re seeing with these unmet needs – a contractor came in and addressed the initial issue but left it unfinished or did not do the work correctly. My dad taught me how to work with my hands. There’s nothing here that I couldn’t fix or repair.”

And his faith continues to guide him through his professional and personal life.

“I’ve been a pastor for nine years. It’s been a journey and coming to The Salvation Army, I share that passion of mission. This is a church. To be in an organization that shares that value is great. I want to be of service and that’s where I am in my life right now.”

The Salvation Army Midtown Service and Treatment Center Earns CARF® Accreditation - The Salvation Army Greater St. Louis Metropolitan Area 01/21/2025

The Salvation Army is excited and honored to announce that our Midtown Service and Treatment Center has earned the prestigious accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF)!

“Having spent seven years assigned to the Midtown Service and Treatment Center earlier in my career, this achievement hits home,” said Major Adam Moore, Greater St. Louis Area Commander.

This accreditation process included a rigorous, in-depth and detailed review of its service and quality standards in more than 20 areas including financial management, health and safety, cultural competence, and more. The Midtown Service and Treatment Center will maintain its accreditation for three years, and then re-apply to maintain its CARF status.

“The accreditation is recognition of the tireless work of our team at Midtown and signifies our dedication to providing critical social services in St. Louis,” said Kimberly Beck, Midtown Service and Treatment Center Executive Director. “CARF-accredited programs often see double-digit year-over-year increases in the volume of individuals they serve due to the efficiency of standardized processes. As social workers, that speaks to our mission – serving the most people and doing the most good we can for this community.”

MAJOR congrats to The Salvation Army St. Louis - Midtown Service and Treatment Center and its team for achieving and receiving its CARF accreditation!
