The legendary Skratch Bastid is coming down from Toronto to rock with us…whether you know him for his amazing Bastid’s BBQ parties, as a three-time Skribble Jam DJ battle winner and ambassador for Red Bull Thre3style, for his epic and varied collaborations with folks like Jazzy Jeff, or as the guy who did that Star Wars scratch you saw on ebaumsworld…you are in for a treat, one of the greatest hip hop DJs on planet earth rocking live on Cherokee St.

Also on the bill are St Louis luminaries Jay-E, Biko fka Needles and Mahf, rounding out an insane lineup of talent…with the one and only Finsta hosting as always and special guests yet to be announced.

PHAT LACES was my 2nd mixshow on commercial radio. After leaving 100.3 The Beat, I was able to join Q95.5 fairly quickly with the opportunity to continue my classic & underground Hip-Hop show known as “The Basement”. At the time, ‘Rap City’ had adopted that same name as kind of a subtitle and I also figured new station - new name, so I retired “The Basement” and “PHAT LACES” was born

Even though I enjoyed a nice chunk of airtime on The Beat with a 7-10pm slot every Saturday night, Q95.5 gave me 10pm-1am Sunday nights which was a better fit for a show like mine. I always felt Saturdays at 7pm was pre-club prime time for mixshows and the average radio listener probably wasn’t trying to tune in and hear a bunch of unknown music, so Sunday night seemed much more appropriate

I hit up my dude Finsta to hold down the mic while I focused on the mix and with the extra hour we were able to frame a pretty dope program right out of a Hip-Hop head’s dream. From 10pm-midnight, it was an onslaught of new Hip-Hop from artists like Little Brother, Slum Village, Jean Grae and STL’s own Black Spade with 80s/90s classics sprinkled in. I was happy to bring in the homie Agile-One to join the show not too long after to take over the 11:00 hour. Then we did our countdown: The Phat 10 @ 12, which Finsta killed every week with the callers announcing the songs from number 10 to 1. The last hour was actually a show within the show called “The Subway” - dedicated to straight independent/underground Hip-Hop with the last 15-20 min of the show being an “open mic” freestyle session for emcees to call in and spit live on the air. Again, Finsta killed it with the callers and the organization of the segment

I look back fondly on this time. I was in my mid-20s playing music that I loved on the fxxking radio with no restrictions. Thanks to everyone who ever tuned in, called in, guest-announced, freestyled, or just cooled out - cooled out and listened to us
