Scott Burton's Onyx Table glows warmly at the Pulitzer. Made of polished stone sliced thin and lit from the interior with orange and pink fluorescent bulbs, Burton appreciated the material's "primeval chaos" with its colorful veins and gradients.

On Saturday, October 19, join New York-based artist Gordon Hall for 1-2pm, a lecture-performance that engages the sculptures in Scott Burton: Shape Shift and the museum’s architecture, transforming the space into a dynamic stage.
Through a blend of text, projection, and movement, we will explore the often-overlooked experience of waiting—a state where time becomes palpable through inactivity. Situated somewhere between an academic lecture and a dance, Hall engages Burton’s practice and legacy, highlighting the potential of focusing on passive objects of support.

"In the 1970s, Burton made a bronze cast of an old-fashioned wooden chair he’d found. It weighed about 250 pounds. The chair was placed on the street outside a gallery, and Burton and some friends amused themselves by watching people trying, unsuccessfully, to take it away. “Sculpture as agent of performance” is how Burton came to think of the event." - The Wall Street Journal

"Oh, yes, sitting, the great leveler. From the mightiest pharaoh to the lowliest peasant, who doesn’t enjoy a good sit?"– Mr. Burns, The Simpsons
"The late Scott Burton would agree. Much of the artist’s practice engaged with chairs and sitting, and a new show at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation aims to introduce the underknown visionary—who died at 50 from an AIDS-related illness—to the wider world."
