Getting older is not about finding the answers to questions.
It is—amongst the *ever-increasing* list of questions with diminishing returns—about coming to terms with the reasons we ask the questions in the first place.

This is a hard one for me…

Spotlight Pet Services mourns the loss of Lucy, a sweet old shih tzu cared for by Jared Schnabel.

Everyone feels a certain way about their pets—companion, security blanket, exercise partner, duty-of-care recipient, counselor, link to the past…
Pets can be any or all of these—or more, but… they are to me a herald to things beyond our singular physical being that matter—that depend on us. It’s the reason so many carers view them as part of the family—if not indeed furry children.

And like a child, Lucy could vacillate stubborn to downright difficult then swing right through to sweetly endearing. Grooming her was never particularly easy, but so few things of value are.
Caring for her in the later years could not have been easy for Jared—seeing her vision, hearing, and memory fall away… but there are debts that can never be sufficiently repaid, and he did all of the best he could for what Lucy was to him.

They say the pain of grief is the strain of Love with no place left to go. It is one of the many indicators that we are desirous of outreach and capable of connection.
The Lost is often so tightly interwoven that we feel unmade by its evanescence, but *damaged* is not *broken*. I’m sure Jared will find peace enough to care for another pet knowing also that *subsequence* is not *replacement*.
