Nathan no longer works for Hankins, but he was a decent laborer while we had him. We hope the best in his endeavors.

We are proud to be awarded the "Red Barn Renovations" in the City of Festus.

Do you know your Drywall colors and purposes?

Drywall comes in several colors, each indicating different properties and intended uses, the most common being White/Gray Drywall used for general interior wall and ceiling applications.

What you see here is Durock, a cement board used primarily as a substrate for tile in wet areas such as bathrooms, showers, tubs, and kitchens.

Knowing the colors and properties will help you determine the best board for your application.

Green Drywall = Moisture-Resistant (Greenboard)
Purple Drywall = Mold and Moisture-Resistant
Blue Drywall = Plaster Base (Blue Board)
Yellow Drywall = Fiberglass-Backed (Glass Mat)
Brown Drywall = Fiber-Reinforced increased strength and impact resistance

Do you know why contractors put “plastic” down before they pour concrete?

This is called a v***r barrier, also known as a v***r retarder. The main purpose is to prevent moisture from migrating through a concrete slab from the ground below. This is especially important in environments where moisture control is critical, such as in basements, garages, or other structures with concrete floors.

Typically this is made from polyethylene plastic sheeting, which is laid directly on the ground before the concrete is poured, and is a crucial step in ensuring the longevity and performance of concrete flatwork by protecting it from the potentially damaging effects of moisture.

What many do not know about a v***r barrier, is it helps with mold growth!

One of the few times you'll ever hear me say plastic is good. 😉

What's the biggest threat to every building/structure?

Water!

It's ironic the key ingredient to life is also the main reason buildings fall apart. Never underestimate the power of water, and what it can do to your foundation.

One of the main scopes for the Overland Police renovations is new storm drains throughout the site. Hankins is contracted to route all the existing gutter downspouts far away from the building, as well as a new parking lot and decorative patio.

Sullivan Middle School is right on track.

The completion date is scheduled for August 7th!

Have you seen a foundation that uses the earth for its forms?

We pour directly into the excavated area, in the desired shape. This is the preferred method if the foundation is not exposed and is a continuous footing.

Our high clay soil is just another thing great thing about Missouri.

When deciding to build a chase wall a designer can try to make things perfect and fit only the items needed. However, If we built a bump out for each item, this wall would look messy and give the room a busy feeling.

Our Superintendents look out for these things, and in the picture, you will notice the dead space between the plumbing stack and the future fire extinguisher.

Remember, everything is intentional and simplicity is the key to life.

Although, this looks like "wax off" this is old adhesive.

Removing the old adhesive under VCT is a tedious job, but this needs to be done. We do not skip steps and make sure our Trade Partners do not either.

How do plumbing carriers improve hygiene?

Plumbing carriers are support systems used in plumbing to securely mount and support plumbing fixtures, such as toilets, urinals, sinks, and lavatories.

Typically we see these made of steel and attach the fixture to the supporting wall lifting the fixture off the ground. Like the ones you see here for toilets.

One of the benefits is space efficiency, but what many do not think about is improved hygiene.

Bathroom floors are some of the dirtiest places, and since the carriers lift the fixture off the ground this makes it easier to clean around and under. The fewer cracks and corners that bacteria can collect the better.

What do nervous carpenters do?

They bite their nails.

What is the purpose of the cross bracing in floor joist?

This is important in floors to maintain structural integrity and reduce bounce or vibrations.

One of the main benefits would be increased stability. As they prevent lateral movement and twisting of joists.

With the increased stability this helps reduce squeaking. While keeping joists in place there is less likely for the movement to loosen floor nails.

Lastly, it helps improve load distribution. When you spread the load more evenly across the floor, this reduces stress on individual joists. Increasing the longevity of your floor and structural members.

Have you ever wondered how joints on wall tiles look so even?

A good tile setter uses spacers on all the joints, including the horizontal and the vertical gaps.

These tile spacers vary in size, typically ranging from 1mm (1/32 inch) to 10mm (3/8 inch), depending on the desired width of the grout line and the type of tile used.

Before deciding how thick you want your tile joints, you should pick your grout. The three types are Sanded, Unsanded, and Epoxy Grout. Each grout has unique characteristics and recommended joint size.

This is an example of our Last Planner System coined by the AGC of Missouri.

The AGC offers lots of classes that benefit not only the General Contractor but most importantly the Trade Partners. We have had great success in building our schedules together.
