Another variation.
I’m working on a challenge that has a funky lateral glide to a push up.
In practicing, I realized that I don’t have a lot of control in those wide ranges. I’ve trained my body to be efficient and compact. This is a first attempt in breaking my push-up “out of the mold”.
A couple of things: as this became harder, I started to lose my core strength.
Pushups require core strength for correct form AND for the “push-up” part to be efficient for your arms, your core has to be rigid so that lower body isn’t flopping around.
Pulling my abdominals in - aka pulling my belly button towards my spine, will help support that bridge between the upper and lower half. That makes a push-up wildly more successful and easier to string multiple in a row.
Second, I’m placing my ankles in a more dorsiflexed position. Which means I’m over utilizing my quads and hip flexors, because I’m giving my anterior chain an advantage by shortening the distance.
Making those two changes and keeping at this new variation is how I’m going to achieve this fun little goal.

Here is a direct stretch for the hip flexor. The main muscle here is the , and in this position you can really isolate one side at a time.
Be curious. Pay attention. Are both sides symmetrical?
Do they feel equal? Do they feel the same? Is one achey/sharp/pinching?
The rule here is to listen to your body. Overstretching can be just as harmful as not enough. Just do 2-3 minutes total on each side, only needed once per day. Breathe and move slow and with control.

This is me, trying really hard, about 4 years ago. This is counting macros, and high intensity workouts 4-5 days per week, and no real results to be seen. But I was nearly 215 pounds at my heaviest, and desperate to lose the weight that I gained after 2 kids, so I kept it up for 3 years.
And then one day, I had enough. I couldn’t keep up the momentum without seeing the results. So I decided to stop working harder and work simpler.
I stopped tracking macros and started eating mindfully.
I started doing yoga and changed my exercise routine to lower intensity strength training.
I hit weekly goals for activity, and focused on making them “life rewards” - something that is good for me that I enjoy doing. Which made me try new things, and bring my family along with me.
But most importantly, I decided to show up, every day, and make the right choices to get me closer to my goals.
And the only thing that is special about this, is that I did it by myself. But I have the tools to help you.
I’m a concierge doctor of physical therapy who understands the body, how it moves, and the way it works. And, I’m a wife, mom, and business owner, who understands the uphill challenge of prioritizing time for yourself. I know what it takes to make a monumental change, and I know it’s possible, especially with someone to help guide the way.
