"A new thing" – John G Nicholls Art & Design I am learning at the moment in my recovery that sometimes we need to let go of the old to embrace the new things that are just beginning to grow up, or even to give them space to grow. Personally I find this difficult and sometimes painful and only through looking back can I see why I needed to take...
This image has been on my mind a lot recently. Maybe it is as we come out of some of the Covid restrictions. But I am reminded the process of release from anything holding us is often a slow rather than a sudden process.
Release When we are trapped within our difficulties, it feels like a cage around us. It traps us, yet also somehow the confines bring us safety and security, a way to cope when what is outside feels risky and uncertain.

"How is it I am still learning this truth! Recovery is breaking chain after chain after chain. Daring to speak out, find a voice, trust mental health workers. Even this week I have had to push past my comfort zone, try to ask for the help I need. When everything in me wants to push people away, run and hide, retreat to a safe place inside myself. I am still learning this truth recovery is breaking chain after chain after chain, and each chain is a risk, yet the risk of not trying is greater still, of being stuck in a difficult place forever. Recovery is hard work." Rachel.
I have painted another silk image. Inspired by the life cycle of the dragonfly, which spends most of its life scrabbling about as a nymph, then sheds its final skin to reveal its beauty and can breathe air and fly. Amazingly its ultimate form and beauty was there all along hidden from view. I take comfort from this image as I go through my own trauma work.

I have painted on silks and made a new card today. It is titled "Keep moving onwards" As on all my cards it includes a thought of mine linked to recovery that inspired the picture. "Once the butterfly emerges from it's cocoon it keeps moving forwards, it doesn't look back and try to become a caterpillar again. Often in recovery we are tempted to look back or we slip back but even when this happens we can start again, as our wings strengthen it becomes our new way of being" I am aware this process is not easy and is a gradual, sometimes a lifelong process. Rachel
7x5" "Onwards" Butterfly Card A 7x5" Card from an original silk painting by Rachel. Card is blank for your own message and comes complete with white envelope and protective cellophane sleeve. The reverse of the card is printed with a description of the meaning of the image.
This image is titled "Beauty out of brokenness." It is inspired by the Japanese art of Kintsugi repairing broken pots with gold. The finished object is more precious and beautiful than a pot that has never been broken. Out of our brokenness comes inner beauty. I need to remember this as I walk day by day through my own recovery journey. When we feel swamped by our current situation, we need to somehow fix our eyes on the future. When the pot is first broken no-one would dream of how beautiful the fragments could become in time. Rachel
