https://learnmuscles.com/ Dr. Joseph Muscolino discusses all things neuromuscular (neuromyofascioskeletal) ....anatomy / physiology / kinesiology / pathophysiology / assessment / manual and movement therapies.
The three major keys to musculoskeletal (neuro-myo-fascio-skeletal) health are:
1. Strength of musculature
2. Flexibility of soft tissues
3. Proper neural/motor control of posture and movement patterns
Certainly, other factors matter, but these are the three key most direct factors. Does your health / workout program address all three of these factors?

Carrying a purse/bag on one shoulder, because of the slope of our upper trunk/shoulder, requires constant isometric contraction of elevators of the shoulder girdle (upper trapezius and rhomboids) on that side (regardless of how heavy/light the bag is). This can lead to tight musculature, including myofascial tripper points in the neck and shoulder, with resultant pain and dysfunction, including headaches. 😑. A cross body bag largely avoids this problem. 👍🏼

The disc joint has two main components:
-outer annulus fibrosus
-inner nucleus pulposus
The disc joint is located anteriorly in the midline, between vertebral bodies.
A disc joint is an amphiarthrotic, cartilaginous joint, with the bodies of the vertebrae united by fibrocartilage.
The annuls fibrosus consists of 10-20 concentric layers of fibrocartilage, arranged in a basket-weave configuration.
Notes:
-There is no disc joint at the atlanto-axial (C1-C2) joint level and at the atlanto-occipital (C1-C0) joint level… because the atlas (C1) has no body, and disc joints are located between bodies of vertebrae.
-This cross-section view nicely demonstrates the outer cortical compact bone and the inner spongy (cancellous) trabecular bone.

This is an X-ray of a patient of mine. Throughout 15 years of treating her, whenever I see her and ask how she’s been since the visit, the answer has almost always been “fine”. She rarely experiences pain from her scoliosis. It is quite amazing what the human body can accept with postural distortion patterns without having to have associated pain.
Having said this, certainly, an asymmetric posture does place increased compression and tension forces into the tissues, and can predispose to cause pain and dysfunction… but not always so. Between static posture/structure and dynamic movement/function, I believe that function is always more important.

This is one of my favorite illustrations that I had my artist draw. It shows the relationship with the limits of our vision and how this matches the planes of our scapulae. In other words, working in the frontal plane is really not a functional plane for movement, whereas working within the scapular planes is.
