The International-Style Lovell House was designed and built by Richard Neutra between 1927 and 1929. Located in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, and was built for the physician and naturopath Philip Lovell. It is often described as the first steel frame house in the United States, and is considered a major turning point in architectural history. (Photo: Julius Shulman, 1961; ©J. Paul Getty Trust. With vast window-walls framing ever-changing views of the Pacific Ocean, Richard Neutra's 1957 Wise House was proof that, for Neutra, architecture was as much about creating memorable experiences as about enduring comforts. The satisfaction of "thrilling occurrence," he wrote in a 1954 essay, was to be more highly prized than "humdrum steadiness." (Photo: Julius Shulman, 1957; ©J. Paul Getty Trust. It was published in Home and Garden magazine, signaling mainstream America's new interest in Modernist architecture. (Photo: Julius Shulman, 1947; ©J. Paul Getty Trust. Alfred H. Barr Jr. and Philip Johnson, two pivotal figures in the promotion of modernist art and architecture, are captured together in this iconic photograph. Barr, the founding director of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, played a crucial role in defining and advocating for modernism in the United States. Philip Johnson, renowned architect and curator, collaborated with Barr to bring groundbreaking exhibitions to MoMA, including the influential 1932 "International Style" exhibition. Their partnership significantly shaped the course of modernist design, making them true ambassadors of the movement.
While his birth certificate indicates otherwise, Calder was born on this day in 1898 (see our post from 22 July for the story). On the occasion of the artist’s 40th birthday, a white cake with lavender mocha was procured for the celebration in Roxbury. “I still had my old shop in the icehouse—the new one was to be built that fall—and the electric wiring was rudimentary. The bar was in my shop and at a certain moment I was trying to plug in a light, so I did not witness the arrival of Adèle, our maid. She had placed the cake, all candles lit, on a big wicker tray. Louisa, in preparation for the festivity, had mowed the lawn that afternoon, and as Adèle stepped off the stone step of the woodshed door the cake skidded off the tray and landed upside down in the new-mown grass. To the lavender and white, a third color was added—but it was still delicious.”
