Diasporic Tombsweeping | April 4, 2024

12-1:30pm Stanford Mausoleum
5-6:30pm Kong Chow Monument

You are invited to engage in ancestral practices, such as burning joss paper to bring loved ones comfort in the afterlife. Artists Grace Jin (BEMH Scholar) and Bryan Dominguez will draw from Chinese and Mexican traditions to collectively build an ink calligraphy installation and weave Ojo de Dios (God’s eye), a Huilchol yarn kite and spiritual object for protection.

Diasporic Tombsweeping is a social practice project on Ching Ming Festival (清明節 / Tombsweeping Day), which honors deceased ancestors in Chinese tradition. Started in the wake of the Half Moon Bay shooting in January 2023, the project reflects on collective grief through art, ritual, and gathering to honor tied destinies across and beyond the Sino-diaspora.

https://bioethicstoday.org/blog/doctoring-dobbs-on-the-art-and-ethics-of-erasing-abortion-law/

"It has been one year since the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling ended federally protected abortion rights and threatened many more. Doctoring Dobbs is a response to this ruling that melds my work as cultural anthropologist, advocate for reproductive justice, and artist." Former SCBE post-doc Risa Cromer.

Doctoring Dobbs: On the Art and Ethics of Erasing Abortion Law Doctoring Dobbs is a gallery of erasure poems I created by strategically “doctoring” each page of the Dobbsruling, removing select words to reveal new messages about the histories, harms, and hopes entailed in the Court’s seismic changes to US reproductive law.

Please offer a warm welcome to our inaugural Health Equity Media Fellows, Indira Khera and Sejal Parekh MD! Both will join us on campus this September, 2023.

Indi is a Chicago based journalist focused on health, climate change and Asian American communities.

She was most recently a reporter at WBEZ - Chicago's public radio station. At WBEZ, Indi reported on stories ranging from giant snapping turtles in the Chicago River to a museum exhibit celebrating the art and poetry of South Asian women.

Indi has also previously worked with NPR’s daily science podcast Short Wave. She grew up in New England and graduated from The University of Chicago with a degree in biology.

***

Dr. Sejal Parekh is thrilled to be part of the inaugural cohort of the Stanford Health Equity Fellowship and looks forward to building skills in print and investigative journalism.

While earning her MD at Stanford, her media work began with “Precision Bites," a podcast about weight management counseling aimed at medical trainees. During her pediatrics residency at the University of California, San Diego, she completed a rotation at ABC News covering health and medicine.

Her work and advocacy as a pediatrician, including her time in the Navajo Nation and working with Central American asylum seekers, has further inspired her commitment to health equity and her path to becoming a physician-journalist.

Join me in congratulating Dr. Adjoa Boateng for winning the prestigious Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation Award for Excellence in Clinical teaching. This award recognizes exceptional contributions by faculty teaching in the clerkship years. Dr. Boateng’s passion for medical humanities has had a meaningful impact in medical training in the School of Medicine. She has reframed our student’s approach to the patient-physician relationship to address and recognize health disparities in marginalized groups. As a physician, writer and humanitarian; she has consistently shown excellence in clinical care, professionalism and education. She is the clerkship educator for the INDE 297 course, “Reflections and Contextual Medicine”, a novel course designed to provide structured time to promote both reflection on and reinforcement for learning in the clinical environment.
