A common myth about hospice care is that when patients enter hospice, they are giving up control.
This is simply false. You are always in control of your care and may choose to end hospice care or change providers. Patients and families make the final decision about when to choose hospice and who provides care. The best care happens when we listen first and coordinate with you, your family, and your doctor.

One common myth about hospice is that hospice and palliative care are the same.
The truth is both provide practical, emotional, social, and spiritual support for people and their families. Hospice only begins after a person makes the decision to end treatment for a terminal illness. Hospice patients continue to receive treatment for any disorders not related to the hospice diagnosis. Palliative care is extra medical and social support for people at any stage of illness.

We finally received our handmade benches for our front porch area at OAH. These two benches are In Memory of two of our former patients. A mother and son that we had in our facility just 3 months apart. Libby and Ron Pratt.
The benches are so beautiful and we are so proud to have them at our facility. Thank you Mr. Danny Hood for your hard work on making the benches.
A common myth about hospice care is that it only takes place at an in-patient facility or hospital.
The truth is that hospice care can happen anywhere a patient calls home. This can be a private residence, nursing home, or assisted living facility. We strive to make sure our patients are able to stay in the comfort of their own home for as long as they need.

July is Bereaved Parents Month.
The loss of a child is one of most traumatic experiences a parent will ever have to face. Bereaved Parents Month helps to raise awareness about the support needed immediately following loss, and the need for continued support and resources for bereaved parents in the subsequent months and years. Grief is complex and nonlinear; it doesn’t follow a set pattern, as most people move through the stages of grief in a variety of ways.
We encourage parents to keep their child’s memory alive – keep sharing pictures and stories. A child lives in a parent’s heart forever.
The Palliative Care Program of Ogeechee Area Hospice is being developed based on the specific needs of our residents with advanced, progressive conditions. The goal is to improve the quality of life for individuals living at home, in assisted living facilities, and nursing homes.
With the development of our Palliative Care Program, we are expanding our services to support a broader, but specific population; those who are facing severe, chronic disease, with a history of problematic symptoms.
Our nurses will collaborate with the patient and their physician to develop a plan of care that meets each patient’s individual needs. Other palliative care professionals may also be involved in the patients care. The patient is NOT required to have a six month prognosis. The patient can receive traditional medical treatment while in the Palliative Care Program, and receive traditional home health services and other community services while benefiting from palliative care.

“I've never been to a hospice. I assumed they looked like hospitals. This Hospice was so nice and cozy. It looked like someone's home. All the staff--from the volunteers to the staff to the nurses--were incredibly nice and accommodating. We had one nurse during the day, Elizabeth, that was very sweet and was with us from beginning to end.
The room was spacious and cozy. I can't believe how nice this place was. It looked like a large bedroom, not a hospital room. They really try to make it as homey as possible.
There were various memorials throughout the home (i.e. plaques for donations towards a room or item in a room). We would definitely like to make a donation soon due to the exceptional care my mother-in-law received. I'm very grateful places like this exist, and I hope the Ogeechee Area Hospice stays open for a very long time. Thank you so much for making the process easier.”

Hospice care improves a patient’s quality of life. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, hospice care may increase life expectancy, and research has supported that idea. They found that when patients with terminal cancer received at least one day of hospice care, their life expectancy increased by up to three months. While hospice care doesn't treat an illness, it manages pain and other symptoms, focusing on the comfort, dignity and quality of life of the person who's dying.

Today on Father’s Day, we honor all dads – those that are still with us and those who are looking down on us from above. They will always hold a special place in our heart.

CONGRATULATION!!!!
Our lucky winner of our 2024 Rev Golf Cart is Jackson Carswell.
He told us a funny story he bought 4-tickets. He gave 2 tickets to his sister and he kept 2. The two tickets he kept were numbers 0679-0680. His ticket number 0680 won! Number 068 was yesterdays date and his daughters birthday, plus 0679. numbers 67 was the year his daughter was born.
I don't think that could ever happen again.
AMAZING! That's the best word I can think of from last night. Our community did it again. Thank you to everyone that came out and supported Ogeechee Area Hospice at our Annual Gala last night. It was an amazing event. The community here and surrounding communities never fail to surprise me on how big their hearts are.
There's so many people that have there hands in this event, but we could not pull off such an event without my committee: Tammy Horton, Cindy Kirkhart, Frank Sherrod, Lynn Rushing, and Cathy Deal. We also could not do any of our events without all of our volunteers. The ones that were working the event last night, or selling raffle tickets, or helping to collect donation items. They are simply priceless!
We also have to thank all of the businesses that donated in some way to our Gala. If it was with your time, flowers, money, or items for our silent/live auction, thank you all for everything, most of all for you support to Ogeechee Area Hospice.
