Last week, we attended the Social Gerontology Community Conference at Georgia Southern University to support our Medical Director, Dr. Maulik Patel, as he delivered the keynote address: Meaningful Life: Age-Friendly Care.

Dr. Patel is a devoted expert in geriatric medicine in Savannah, Georgia. A graduate of Mercer University School of Medicine, he deliberately chose geriatrics as his specialization due to its distinctive challenges. "In my experience with adult patients, I've often found suitable medications to address their health issues," he explains. "However, when it comes to older adults, sometimes the solution lies in discontinuing unnecessary medications. This approach allows me to explore non-pharmacological methods to assist patients while limiting medication use to those that offer clear benefits."

Dr. Patel's primary objective is to empower his patients to take charge of their own health. "I believe in equipping patients with knowledge about their conditions, prevention strategies, and effective disease treatment," he says. "Above all, I ensure they are well informed about the medications they are taking and potential side effects."

During , we'd like to show our appreciation to our Chaplain and Bereavement Coordinator, Mr. Bobby Walthour. Reflecting on his roles at Gentiva Hospice Statesboro, Mr. Bobby said, "My commitment to our patients and families is to walk with them on their spiritual journey while helping them connect strongly to their faith by empowering them to know they are not alone. Even greater than me being there, God has promised to 'never leave nor forsake us.' He is and will always be there until the end. He promised us this, no matter what!"

Our patients, families, and staff are so blessed to know him.

Social Gerontology Community Conference 2023 Theme: "Feeling Free in 2023: Aging in a Changing World."

If you are a professional working with the adult aging population, an older community member, or a care partner, we would love to see you at the 2023 Social Gerontology Community Conference on October 27th in The Russell Union at Georgia Southern University.

"This conference promotes successful aging and positive social change. Our goals are to enhance the quality of life, mental and physical health, and social well-being of older adults at all levels of capability. We also work to maximize the knowledge, effectiveness, and overall well-being of all professional and non-professional people who support older adults."

The Keynote Presentation, Meaningful Life: Age-Friendly Care, will be delivered by our very own Gentiva Hospice Statesboro Medical Director, Dr. Maulik Patel. He will discuss the benefits of hospice and symptom management.

Thank you, Georgia Southern University, for this opportunity to share the amazing benefits of hospice.
