“[T]here is often nothing I can do, no amount of effort I can exert, to absolutely ensure the productive success of the garden. I’m used to being able to work so hard at something that there is no chance I will fail. Now, I have the variables of time, temperature, and the countless other biological and ecological mysteries of other-than-human lives and their interactions to contend with, making it impossible to ensure my control over the space.
And truly, when I ground myself in my aspirations toward connectedness with the natural world, control over the garden is not actually something that I desire at all. Rather, I seek a partnership, and that partnership can only be honed through trial and – this is the important part – error.”

“Though I was so excited to begin using the BCS, one round of training had me feeling discouraged and nervous; my arms wobbling like jell-o, I felt as though I would never quite get comfortable using this heavy machine in the field. How could I possibly make a good bed if I could not even till in a straight line in an open field filled with chickweed?
Through many frustrating attempts at tilling, I eventually began to understand how the BCS ran and maneuvered across the field. I started to feel confident in my ability to control the machine and had let go of the sense of “perfect” that I had been holding myself to: I was learning, it was completely alright to make a few mistakes. By the end of the week, I was able to create fairly decent beds and once again felt excited about getting to use the BCS in the future.”

Community Fellow Emily recently took second graders on a scavenger hunt through the Bessie Weller School Garden to discover what plants need. Students started with a string, a bead to represent each plant, and – as they found them – a bead for each of its needs: air, water, sun, soil, and care.
Students discussed that humans have very similar needs and ended with a reminder that we all need to care for each other as well as our plants!

Our Story
Allegheny Mountain Institute (AMI) is a 501(c)3 educational nonprofit organization that cultivates healthy communities through food and education. AMI’s vision is a thriving network of collaborative, vibrant communities who value the connection between food and health.
AMI’s flagship program is an 18-month Farm and Food Education Fellowship that prepares and empowers individuals to become teachers and ambassadors for a more vibrant and accessible local food system founded in 2011 (as the Allegheny Mountain School). Selected Fellows spend six months in immersive training on the AMI mountain farm campus (Phase I) and one year in service work with non-profit partner organizations (Phase II). [Read more about the Fellowship below]
In 2014, AMI launched and incubated an Urban Farm at the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind (VSDB), transforming a barren lot into a vibrant, productive educational garden that served as a hands-on classroom for VSDB students, local teachers and community members alike.
After the successful establishment of the farm, VSDB took on management of the Farm-to-School program in 2018, just as AMI began an innovative Farm-to-Hospital partnership with Augusta Health. Today, the AMI Farm at Augusta Health is a joint venture of AMI and Augusta Health to raise awareness about the importance of healthy eating and sustainable growing practices.
