The MBU Story
Mary Baldwin University, formerly Mary Baldwin College, is a small, distinctive, private institution offering bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs. Founded in 1842 as Augusta Female Seminary, today the multifaceted university educates women and men on its main campus in Staunton, as well as on its health sciences campus in Fishersville, centers throughout Virginia, and online.
Nationally ranked among the best master’s-level universities for civic service and quality education, Mary Baldwin has a reputation of adaptability, flexibility, and diversity. In response to shifts in society and the higher education landscape, Mary Baldwin has maintained its core women's college and extended its mission to new student populations through several initiatives in the past 40 years, including innovative single-sex initiatives such as the Program for the Exceptionally Gifted and the Virginia Women’s Institute for Leadership, as well as co-ed programs within the University College, MBU Online, and graduate programs in Shakespeare and Performance, education, business, and health professions.
The university is the oldest institution of higher education for women in the nation affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, and it is home to the only all-female corps of cadets in the world. U.S. News & World Report consistently names MBU as one of the top regional universities in the South.
The city of Staunton — nestled in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley — is ranked by Smithsonian Magazine among the country’s top ten best small cities for its historic downtown and engaging arts community. Each summer, campus is home to talented young musicians from around the world who attend the Heifetz International Music Institute. In addition, a robust partnership with the renowned American Shakespeare Center provides opportunities for students to learn and experience theatre just steps away in the Blackfriars Playhouse, the world’s only authentic re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor performance venue.
