HEAVY RAINFALL POTENTIAL | MONDAY .... Thunderstorms this afternoon and evening will likely produce TORRENTIAL DOWNPOURS in the "High" and "Very High" area.
While the "Flash Flood Guidance" is showing 1.5 to 3 inches in a 1 to 3 hour period (the amount of rain it would take in that duration to produce flash flooding), very high dew points in the mid 70's and Precipitable Water ranging 2 to 3 inches are strong indicators of a heavy rainfall potential. Watch for rapidly rising creeks and streams, and flooding across low-lying and poor drainage areas.

15 years ago; we witnessed the horrifc images of terrorist attack on our Nation. Specifically; in New York City at the World Trade Center, at the Pentagon in Arlington County, and in a country field in Shanksville, PA. We were sadden by the lost of life that day, but drew strength from the first responders in our country who made the ultimate sacrifice and who unselfishly rushed into help. Further, we continue to support and say thank you to those who have and continue to protect and defend our Country today.
Last; we recognize those members who served that fatefull day who rushed to the station to staff additional units and staions, who covered stations both in Fairfax and Arlington, and those on the scene at the Pentagon. Many of those members still contine to serve Sterling Rescue today.

It also covered advance line-systems pertaining to water rescues, and tethered rescue swimmer techniques using a type V rescue life jacket. Loudoun County Professional Firefighters- IAFF Local 3756

Great falls this morning.
The river crested early this morning. Currently this is what 117,000 CFS or about 875,220 gallons per/sec looks like. Where else have you seen water this powerful? Mother Nature is putting on a truly awesome show here today.
Just a friendly reminder, please don't drive through or play in or around flooded roadways or creeks. With the snow melt and rain, creeks are rising to minor flood levels before cresting tomorrow or Friday.

As seen in image 1, originally sent from the Weather Prediction Center earlier today, the storm system expected to impact much of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast region is currently tracking across the Eastern Pacific Ocean. There IS good (and growing) model agreement that this system will likely bring widespread precipitation to our region by late Thursday evening through Friday. It is here that uncertainty begins to creep into the forecast picture. This is what we know at this time:
• As of now, we expect precipitation ahead of this rapidly developing storm system to begin as snow (or a wintry mix at the coast) Thursday evening over most of our area before a turnover to rain, eventually ending as a period of wintry precipitation late Friday. There will be potential mixed precipitation issues to be dealt with in this storm system on Friday. We have provided a graphic of the different precipitation phases. A small change in temperature can make a HUGE difference!
• The exact timing, and resulting rain/snow accumulation remains subject to change. Once again, the storm system that will eventually develop into our late week weather-maker has still not yet reached the west coast!
• At this time, the potential exists for significant snows over parts of our area during the late week period. However, exact details cannot possibly be hammered down at this early stage.
• Please continue to monitor the forecast through the week. The forecast can, and probably will change as the storm system evolves in the coming days. We will continue to keep you updated as the storm takes shape.
• Finally, this is the season for hype in Social Media. As said by our friends at NWS Norman, OK (and Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben in the comic books!), “With great power comes responsibility”. Sharing dire forecasts for this storm system, or verbatim “Raw” model data may increase the “Wow!” factor, but it could also spread panic unnecessarily.

Flooding is one of the leading causes of weather related fatalities in the U.S. On average, flooding claims nearly 90 lives each year. More than half of these deaths occur in motor vehicles when people attempt to drive through flooded roadways. This happens because people underestimate the force and power of water, especially when it is moving.
Just six inches of fast-moving water can knock over and carry off an adult. Twelve inches of water can float a small car. If that water is moving, it can carry that car away. Eighteen to twenty-four inches of flowing water can carry away most vehicles, including large SUVs. It is impossible to tell the exact depth of water covering a roadway or the condition of the road below the water. This is especially true at night when your vision is more limited. It is never safe to drive or walk through flood waters. Any time you come to a flooded road, walkway, or path, follow this simple rule: Turn Around Don’t Drown.
