PAWS Club had two special guest and activities today, what a blast!
We began with Miss Anna from Skyline Health making trail mix. This lesson included a message about having healthy snack options, a lesson on reading a recipe, and hands on practice in measuring ingredients.
The second half of our time was spent putting together Care Bags for our houseless population. Sandy, from Washington Gorge Action Programs, assisted in assembly and will ensure their distribution! PAWS Club kids actively participated in this kindness project! Thank you to the many community donations that made this experience possible for these youth.

A & J Market is an amazing coalition partner and although today’s event wasn’t about prevention, Mrs. Claus showed up to participate. That’s how partnerships work…
One Prevention Alliance hosts an after-school club for Carson Elementary students on Wednesdays. This club provides activities and prevention messages. The focus of the club is encouraging positive actions.
The Positive Action Wins Success (PAWS) Club wants to put together 24 "CARE BAGS" for houseless individuals. Yesterday, during their club meeting, they brainstormed a list of items they hope to include.
If you have a heart for kids or houseless individuals, and a few dollars to spare, please consider purchasing something on their list. If you prefer to shop elsewhere (think local!), just let me know what you will be providing and I'll remove it from the Wish List.
WISHLIST: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/13FKUYBKIEOHQ?ref_=wl_share
The students hope to assemble these kits at their club meeting next week.
If you need an afternoon activity for your child… hop down to A&J and get a coloring sheet!
Dear Sector Representatives, Generous Donors, Community Partners, Parent Participants, and AMAZING YOUTH -- this season of gratitude, we are remembering YOU!
Thank you, all, for putting the COMMUNITY into our coalition! We are so grateful for the many ways you support our vision of having healthy youth, successful families, and a thriving community by reducing the misuse of substances in Skamania County.
Together, we are making a difference!
One Prevention Alliance offers a variety of Parenting Strategy Workshops to provide parents with additional strategies for your parenting/caregiving tool belt. These workshops are based on science and have been proven to increase family bonds and reduce the risk of substance misuse by youth. These protective factors can begin with toddlers and can be layered on and added to through the teen years.
To best utilize One Prevention Alliances resources, we would like to offer the class in January that has the most participant interest.
If you are a parent/caregiver/guardian, and might be interested in a series of workshops (scroll down for descriptions), please click this link, and tell us more about your interest: https://forms.gle/t58QMGioyjcoZkTs7
Program Overviews:
Incredible Years Toddlers: In the Toddler Parenting Program (Basic), parents learn how to: help their toddlers feel loved and secure, encourage their toddler’s language, social, and emotional development, establish clear and predictable routines, handle separations and reunions, use positive discipline to manage misbehavior.
Incredible Years Parenting Program (6 to 12 year old): strengthens parent-child interactions and attachment, reducing harsh discipline and fostering parents’ ability to promote children’s social, emotional, and academic development.
Parents learn how to: monitor children after school, set rules regarding TV, computer, and substance use, support children’s homework or out of school learning, support children’s academic, social, and emotional skills.
Guiding Good Choices: is a drug use prevention program that provides parents of children in grades 4 through 8 (9 to 14 years old) with the knowledge and skills needed to guide their children through early adolescence. It seeks to strengthen and clarify family expectations for behavior, enhance the conditions that promote bonding within the family, and teach skills that allow children to resist drug use successfully.

PAWS Club had many activity options today. The focus today was GRATITUDE and the youth shared their ideas on a cooperative chart! It was great to hear about how grateful our kids are for their families, friends, and community opportunities like PAWS Club.
PAWS Club is thriving due to the community’s donations of snacks, Stevenson-Carson School District sharing space, AND community volunteers. Today, Sandy May Vigil from Washington Gorge Action Programs volunteered.

One Prevention Alliance Community Coalition's volunteer, Judi King, supported the People for People's Second Harvest mobile food truck on Wednesday, November 1st. We feel proud to be a part of a program that feeds our community.
WHY is OPA Involved? Our participation with the food box distribution allowed us to share information about the safe places in Skamania County to confidentially dispose of medication that is expired, unused, or unwanted. We know that the safest homes do not keep unnecessary medication on shelves or in medicine cabinets. As a matter of fact, the safest homes have medication locked up tight and out of sight.
Medication Disposal Kiosks can be found at Wind River Pharmacy and in the lobby Skamania County Sheriff's Office. The kiosks look much like a library book return box and you simply walk up to it and put your medication into the drop. You do not need to speak with anyone and no information is required.
FREE!!! CLASS BEGINS TONIGHT -- you can still register!
If you start having conversations with your 4th - 8th grader now, you will have an extra layer of protection against va**ng, underage drinking, and other substance misuse.
