CEAT students participated in the April 8 eclipse as part of NASA’s Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project. This included a MAE capstone team, graduate students, and freshman research scholars, in addition to OAIRE research engineers. The students made frequent observations by launching hourly radiosondes on helium-filled weather balloons. Student participants work with atmospheric science experts throughout the project and will publish results in peer-reviewed journals. The capstone team used innovative solar balloon systems to record video of the eclipse, observe in situ perturbations in atmospheric phenomena, and conduct an experiment on the impact of insolation on solar balloon performance. The team included high school students from Okmulgee High School and Gordon Cooper Technology Center as part of the NEBP outreach efforts. NASA scientist Geoff Bland was on site as part of NASA’s Science Activation AREN program to demonstrate how kites can be used for atmospheric science. The team also held public viewing and outreach efforts at the Choctaw Nation Community Center in Broken Bow, OK on the day of the eclipse.
Argonia capstone team - Space Cowboys. Took 3rd place in competition last weekend losing out to Purdue and SWOSU. Their two-stage rocket reached an altitude of 3,698 feet with a payload of 210 golf balls. Their rocket was custom designed and built from scratch including wound carbon fiber tubes.
Meet our faculty Thursday!

Research Spotlight! Each week we plan to highlight one of our faculty members and share some insight on their current research.
This week we have Dr. Brian Elbing.
"Our work recording infrasound from the OSIRIS-REx Sample Recovery Capsule. We had two groups involved in recording this and working with NASA Jet Propulsion Lab and Sandia National Labs.
Group 1 (ground) - I sent Kate Spillman (undergrad), Real KC (PhD student), Trevor Wilson (PhD student) and Doug Fox (technician and OSU alum) to the Utah/Nevada border to record the low frequency wave from this hypersonic reentry. We also teamed up with Milton Garces from the University of Hawaii and his team and plan to do some comparative studies between his observations and ours.
Group 2 (balloon) - Emalee Hough and Zach Yap were deployed in Eureka, Nevada to assist NASA JPL with the launching of high-altitude balloons before dawn so that they would have infrasound sensors floating at altitude when the capsule flew overhead."
Both Dr. Brian Elbing and Dr. Jamey Jacob were the principal investigators for this work.
Happy Halloween. Have a spooky day cowboys!
Happy Homecoming Weekend! We hope to see everyone enjoying the festivities this weekend. Go Pokes 🧡🖤
