What makes these State Extension Specialists happy? Sharing their knowledge with interested stakeholders! Dr. Audrey King had the opportunity to hang out in Jackson County this week and share her knowledge of social media strategy! A huge thank you to Altus Chamber of Commerce and Jackson County OSU Extension for hosting her!

The second day of the Hollis LEADERS trip to OKC was packed full! We started with a tour of the State Capitol, met with our elected officials Rep. Gerrid Kendrix and Sen. Brent Howard, learned about the importance of agriculture to rural towns like ours from Secretary of Agriculture Blayne Arthur, listened to opportunities for rural entrepreneurs from the Oklahoma Grassroots Accelerator, and met with the director of the Oklahoma Municipal League. Students were also very excited to meet the Governor for the first time!

We wrapped up the trip with a visit to Restore Farms to learn about the role of social entrepreneurship in communities. The students are taking home a wealth of knowledge and ideas for how they can continue to make a difference in Hollis!

Special thanks to everyone who has been a part of this experience. Huge shout out to the class teacher, Coach Hodges - he deserves an award for best bus driver in the state after navigating downtown traffic and a few misdirections from Dr. Cline. Another big thanks goes to Hollis MS principal, Mrs. Copeland, for partnering with us to bring the rural youth civic leadership curriculum to Hollis!

This year a group of middle school students from Hollis, OK — the Hollis LEADERS Class — have been learning about rural civic leadership and entrepreneurship developed by AECL faculty through a OSU Rural Renewal Initiative seed grant. As a culminating event and to reinforce much of what they’ve learned this year, the Hollis LEADERS Class starting making their way toward OKC today to learn about rural civic leadership and entrepreneurship in action.

We stopped in Frederick to learn more about how rural places can spur economic development - thank you Frederick Chamber of Commerce for hosting us! Next, we had lunch with the mayor of Elgin, JJ Francois, to learn firsthand the importance of civic leadership and public service. The third stop was at the Grady Co. Extension Office to learn about the role of civic organizations in rural communities, such as Leadership Chickasha and The Lions Club. Once in OKC, we visited DayClub Workspaces to tour what modern remote workspaces are like. The day wrapped up with dinner and a little fun at Top Golf!

Yesterday Dr. Cline, Dr. Brown, and graduate student, Brooklyn Evans had the chance to work with almost 200 4-Hers for the West District 4-H Leadership Conference. We talked about "walking the talk" as authentic leaders and why it is so important for your values to drive your actions.
