The Department of Agricultural Economics was established in 1921.
It is Week 3 of classes and our students are having a blast! These students are practicing risk management and decision making by utilizing decision trees in their Farm & Agribusiness Management class. 🌻🧡🎃
Producers, lenders, and policy-makers seeking to gain insight into the rural agricultural economy and make more informed decisions will be interested in attending the 2024 Rural Economic Outlook Conference, Wednesday, October 16 at the Conoco Phillips OSU Alumni Center in Stillwater. This annual one day conference features outside keynote speakers plus OSU faculty. Kenny Burdine, Extension Professor in Livestock Economics at the University of Kentucky is a featured keynote speaker providing an update on Livestock Risk Protection Insurance for Feeder Cattle.
Another featured keynote speaker, Randy Daniels, Chief Risk Officer at Triangle Insurance will discuss the Impact of the Agricultural Insurance Market on the Ag Industry.
Participants also have an opportunity to hear from OSU experts about departmental research, value-added enterprises, and updates on the livestock market as well as faculty views on Ag finance and grain markets.
The registration fee is $50 and includes breakfast, lunch, and breaks.

Our Graduate Student Social was held last week to welcome our new students into the department. Faculty, along with new and returning students, enjoyed getting to know one another!
Yeehaw!! We welcomed 147 new freshman and 65 transfer students to our department this past week! We are so glad to have our returning students back as well! Our agribusiness club, Aggie-X, hosted a Back-to-School Bash that included free snow cones! Check out our busy first week of the semester pictures!
Our department has been busy welcoming our new class of students from China Agricultural University. They've been settling in and doing last minute back-to-school shopping! We are so excited to welcome them to their new home with us at OSU! Welcome Cowboys! 🧡
🏆📝🧡Our final award celebration is for Dr. K. Aleks Schaefer and his coauthors for their outstanding Applied Economic Perspectives and Policy article for 2024! Our faculty do great research and we are proud of their hard work!

We have a familiar face again for an award announcement! Tony Caruso, MS student, won first place in the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA) Policy Communication Competition for his policy brief and presentation on rural healthcare access. Great job representing the Cowboys and supporting rural communities! Tony was advised by Dr. Hannah E. Shear.
We are back at it with another award celebration! This time, it is for Dr. Derrell Peel, who was recognized by the National Association of County Agricultural Agents, with the NACAA Service to American/World Agriculture Award. This is in recognition for all of his work in the cattle and beef industry, and is awarded based on major contributions to American/World Agriculture that are recognized by peers and the general public. Congratulations!

We are busy missing our students, but our faculty and graduate students are also busy with summer conference and award season! We will be sharing some of these with you in the coming weeks! We are starting off with Dr. Hannah E. Shear, who was recognized by the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) for her teaching with the NACTA Educator Award! She presented at the conference in Wooster, Ohio and helped facilitate a working lunch for the Southern Region as she also serves as an Assistant Regional Director for the association. Congrats!🍎✏️🧡

Davidson graduated from the Ferguson College in 2009 with a degree in agricultural economics. He is an attorney with The Public Finance Law Group PLLC and represents clients across Oklahoma. Davidson has shown a commitment to the continued success of the Ferguson College as a donor to the New Frontiers capital campaign and Oklahoma 4-H, recently concluding 10 years as a member of the Oklahoma 4-H Foundation Board of Directors.

Hilbert graduated from the Ferguson College in 2016 with a bachelor's degree in agribusiness. He is currently serving his fourth term as state representative for Oklahoma House District 29 and is slated to serve as the next Speaker of the House. Hilbert remains connected to the college by serving as a guest speaker in various classes and through his mentorship of students serving in the agricultural legislative internship program at the State Capitol and students who are interested in policy and legislative careers.
“As a student in the Ferguson College, I was given every opportunity to grow as a person and be prepared to serve in the state legislature. My education and leadership experiences were instrumental and the relationships with my professors in the college are those I still cherish to this day.”

📣 🚨 Help us help others! Our Aggie-X Agribusiness Club is collecting donations to help those impacted by the wildfires. Some club members are heading to West Texas on Friday to deliver donations as well as take part in the clubs annual trip! We our proud of our students service mindset. Dr. Shear is facilitating the donations with OSU and Texas Extension. 🧡🤠
