OSU Department of Art
Department of Art, Graphic Design, & Art History at Oklahoma State University
The OSU Center for the humanities is raising funds to support a NEW award for undergraduate research travel in the arts and humanities.
“This new grant program will allow undergraduates in the arts and humanities to travel to present their research at national conferences and conduct original research at museums, libraries, and other archives. Our goal is to fund the travel of 3 to 5 undergraduate researchers each spring, increasing their ability to take advantage of such opportunities. This program will improve the visibility of research in the humanities and arts both on campus and nationally, and ensure greater involvement by undergraduate researchers from these vital and important disciplines.”
Please consider contributing to this important program. The fundraiser closes on November 29th - look for the link in our bio to donate!

Working across printmaking, drawing and painting, Elena holds an MFA in painting from Kansas State University and a BFA in fabric and textile design from the Tehran University of Art. Her work delves into the socio-political effects of religious propaganda in Iran over the last 46 years, particularly following the Islamic Revolution. Elena’s art critically examines the impact of Islamic fundamentalist views on societal progress and personal liberties, with a strong focus on the experiences of contemporary Iranian women. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Masur Museum of Art, Full Court Press Print Exhibition of the Americas at Texas A&M University and solo exhibitions at the Massillon Museum of Art and Lawrence Art Center.

Congratulations to Professor on his exhibition "Constructed Emotion," up at MainSite Contemporary in Norman, OK through September 21.
"In this exhibition, "Constructed Emotion," I explore a range of concepts related to current viewpoints in neuroscience, quantum physics, philosophy, and computer science to tell a story about our contemporary experience. This work prompts reflection about our current state of being, and our ever nascent relationship with knowledge which informs a cultural ethos that continually refashions our conception of the self and soul."
All sorts of amazing things are happening in Oil Painting 1 & Studio!
We have still life paintings, color charts, and student proposed projects. Amazing work on all levels of Oil Painting!

🎉 Congratulations 🎉 to Art History Professor Jennifer Borland on winning the 2024 award for Best First Book of Feminist Scholarship on the Middle Ages, from the Society for Medieval Feminist Scholarship!
Her book, titled Visualizing Household Health: Medieval Women, Art, and Knowledge in the Regime du corps (Penn State Univ. Press, 2022), explores the imagery in a number of illustrated copies of a medieval health guide. These images provide insights into how health and wellbeing was managed within the medieval home, where such caregiving was mostly in the purview of female members of the household. Borland argues that these manuscripts expand our understanding of medieval medical care, highlighting the important agency of women within the domestic sphere.
We have lots of new faces in the Department of Art, Graphic Design and Art History this semester! Please join us in welcoming Nijal Munankarmi (Knee-Jawl Moo-nun-car-me, he/him), our new Assistant Professor of Graphic Design 🎉
“I am originally from Nepal and very proud of my heritage. My current work revolves around preserving the cultural heritage along with the language spoken by the indigenous people of the capital. I like to explore the connection between design, both traditional and interactive, and culture and how they can enter the unknown future together. Apart from that, I also work on design justice and mental health issues plaguing our community through various solutions, both on paper and on screens.”

The recently premiered Saints & Santos exhibition, curated by Associate Professor Cristina Gonzales, left many in awe with its stunning art work. This major international project, nearly three years in the making, involved serious scholarship, diplomacy, and significant financial support. The exhibition also benefited from the support of OSU alumni and the generous contribution of key donors like Marilynn and Carl Thoma.
A big thank you to Cristina Gonzales and everyone who visited and experienced the beauty and cultural significance of Saints & Santos.
We are proud to share that our talented Graphic Design Assistant Professor, Nick Mendoza (), has had his incredible work featured in the United States International Poster Biennial in Toronto, Canada! This year, the biennial received an astounding 7,380 international poster submissions from 75 countries, and only 260 exceptional posters were selected across social, cultural, animated, student, and specialty categories.
In other exciting news, faculty members Nick and Pouya () also have work featured in their new exhibition, Intercontinental Bienal, which is currently being held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at the Museum of Architecture and Design (MARQ). This exhibition will tour across the country, touching Brazil, Panama, and San Juan, Puerto Rico, extending into February 2025.
Join us in celebrating the remarkable achievements of our faculty. Their dedication and creativity continue to inspire us all. Stay tuned and be sure to catch these incredible exhibitions if you have the chance!
