The times are forever changing, but the heart of student life stays the same. The last stop on our campus wide tour for "Then & Now" is the beloved Oklahoma State University Student Union — home to a variety of campus life and a staple on the OSU campus.

Once referred to as 'The Waldorf' of Student Unions, the building was built around the notion of helping students. The University wanted a place for students to come together, interact and live their lives as college students.

Despite the building's exterior being relatively the same, the interior underwent a great many changes. The Student Union used to have beautiful terrace gardens which were later removed to make more room for dining space. The food itself has changed over the years too!

Now, our Student Union is home to over 30 different services and organizations within student and campus life. Take a trip to the Union today to see if you can spot the differences, and take a peek at Special Collections and University Archives to learn more about our home for student life, here: bit.ly/3yWftM9

Old Central was the first permanent building constructed on Oklahoma State University campus! Despite being located on the outer edges of campus, it is central to the university's history. Continuing with the latest "Then and Now" series, Special Collections and University Archives turns to Old Central.

In the words of LeRoy Fischer, Ph. D. and author of the Centennial History on Old Central, Old Central "ties the institution to its beginning, celebrates its past and points to its future." Fischer also states that "Old Central is a symbol of the struggles, aspirations and consciousness of the many generations associated with OSU." Old Central, previously known as Central Building, was completed in June 1894 and still proudly stands 130 years later, despite having undergone many renovations. It did not become Old Central until 1923, two years after the building was forced to "retire from student use."

In 1929, President Henry G. Bennett began taking steps to refurbish the building. Unfortunately, despite renewal efforts, Old Central did not house classes or students from 1921 until spring of 1930. After 1930, with a budget of $40,000, President Bennett was able to start the full restoration process. The restored Old Central was then used to host alumni at commencement and America's Greatest Homecoming! By the 1970s, Old Central had been used up to its structural extent once more. This time around, restoration costs were over $700,000. The dedication of the restoration took place in June of 1982.
Long story short, Old Central is really old, but we at SCUA love and appreciate the character it adds to campus! Learn more about Old Central and the history behind it here: okla.st/3SZxIai

Courage. Style. Strength. Three qualities that describe a woman gymnast. As the USA Women's Gymnastics team takes home the gold at the Paris Olympics, OSU Special Collections and University Archives reflects on our own Cowgirl athletes. Between 1975 and 1985, the OSU Women's Gymnastics program soared to new heights. Under the guidance of coach Larry Bilhartz, the Cowgirl gymnasts claimed the Big Eight title of 1980, along with ranking No.10 at the national level.
