Dear Customers,

As we reach the tail end of summer we wanted to take a moment to explain some of the big changes we have experienced in the HVAC industry. The changes will affect us and our customers as they take place. The HVAC industry is required to follow the guidelines from the EPA on freon and the DOE for energy efficiency.

Last year, we experienced a change from the Department of Energy related to SEER ratings. (Think miles per gallon in your car.) The short version is that the powers that be in the DOE recalculated the math that determines energy efficiency ratings and created a new rating called SEER2. This caused manufacturers to redesign some of their equipment features to comply with the new rating system. Naturally, this caused a price increase on those units.

In 2025 we are preparing for a new change in freon. The EPA is now phasing out the use of R-410A type refrigerant in equipment. Manufacturers were given the choice to switch to refrigerant types R-32 or R-454B for 2025. The issue with those two types of freon (while better for the environment) is that they are slightly flammable. While they are difficult to ignite and still safe for use, the fact that they can ignite is changing the way the new equipment is designed. Moving forward, all indoor evaporator coils will have freon detection devices installed in them. In the event of a freon leak, the unit will be unusable until the leak is repaired or the coil is replaced. The days of "adding a little freon" will be over.

These changes will lead to increased costs related to replacements and repairs. We are expecting additional price increases for the new style of equipment in early January of 2025. As your trusted HVAC partner, we wanted to inform you of these big changes prior to their arrival. If you have equipment that needs to be replaced/repaired and requires R-22 or R-410A type refrigerant, it would be best to do this prior to these changes being mandated.

The suppliers are allowed a planned phase-out of the R-410A equipment. Whatever they have left in stock on January 1, 2025, will still be allowed to be sold, but it will not be replenished. Parts stock will be slim for any parts related to equipment requiring R-22 and R-410A refrigerant. If you have been on the fence about repairing or replacing your equipment this will be the last chance before these new changes take effect.
