The priest...no matter where he is located, the diocesan priest has to be the sharer of secrets, the carrier of burdens, the foundation of consolation, and the pillar of strength. Solitary, he is called father by thousands; poor, he enriches the lives of thousands; weak, he gives strength to thousands; unimportant, he does things each day whose importance cannot be told in any tongue on earth. He is never too busy to hear another's sorrows, often too busy to realize his own burdens. He is a 24-hour-a-day man. He is called from his dinner, wakened from his sleep, disturbed at his prayers. He is at the beck and call of any of his people. He is the target of God’s enemies, the magnet of God’s needy. Occasionally, he attracts attention, but usually, he works unnoticed and unacclaimed while he does the noblest work on earth - keeps Christ in the lives of the people.

This is a photo of an ad in the diocesan newspaper, a cherished memory from Bishop Barber's childhood in Oakland, California. He carried it in his wallet for 40 years, a testament to his unwavering faith and dedication. Truly inspiring!

CARLO AND THE SCAPULAR OF MT. CARMEL

"The scapular was one of the devotions to which my son was most attached. Near our house in Milan there was a convent of the Carmelite fathers and we often went to Mass at their place. Among other things, their church was dedicated to Corpus Christi, which Charles loved so much. This frequentation with the Carmelite Order kindled in him the desire to wear the scapular, which he had imposed on him by one of the Carmelite priests when he was seven years old.
..The devotion of the scapular started on July 16, 1251 when the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock, father general of the Carmelite Order. Showing the scapular, Our Lady said, "Take this scapular. Whoever dies wearing it will not suffer the fire of Hell. It will be a symbol of salvation, protection from dangers and a promise of peace." This great promise was confirmed some eighty years later when the Blessed Virgin appeared to Pope John XXII telling him that "those invested with this holy habit will be removed from Purgatory on the first Saturday after their death." At Fatima and Lourdes the apparitions ended with a vision of Our Lady of Mount Carmel with the scapular in her hand. And the Virgin Mary confirmed to Sister Lucy, that the rosary and the scapular are inseparable."

“Our Lady wants everyone to wear the Scapular. … The reason for this is that the Scapular is our sign of consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.” - Sr. Lúcia, one of the children of Fátima

Jesus in the Eucharist — giving himself to us in the Eucharist — also wants to change our hearts. He wants to make us a new self. A self that is holy and good and true.

Saint Mary’s High School celebrates the life of a beloved member of our Ram Family, Mrs. Jackie Villegas.

It is with a heavy heart to announce that Jackie a cherished member of our Ram Family passed away last week.

Jackie spent many years at SM as a devoted parent, then joining our school as a dear colleague in 2018. She shared her time, talent and treasures with our students, teachers, staff, parents and community.

Jackie could be seen daily inside our Cafeteria which is known as our Ram Cafe! No one could match the beautifully built sub sandwiches she made every day for our Ram Family!

Jackie had a heart so large and genuine, she never let any Ram go hungry and she always knew of any Ram who might be in need.

Jackie was also a proud member of our SM Crab Shack committee since 2014. She was always a huge asset to our team and to the success of every Crab Feed Fundraiser, which was always an enormous help to our school, students and programs on campus.

She was a huge supporter to all genres on campus including athletics, theatre arts and our campus spirituality.

Jackie was chosen during our last Holy Week Mass, by Fr. Mathew Issac, for the “Washing of the feet” ritual inside our Morelli Events Center which is transformed into our Church where we celebrate Mass together as one family.

She is survived by her loving family including her mother, Patty Young, husband Shawn, daughter Mikeala Allen, sons, Shawn Jr. and Tre Villegas, and grandchildren Perrier & Logan.

“Jackie was a wonderful person who raised three wonderful children, Mikaela, Shawn Jr. and Tre. She always had a smile on her face who was always so helpful to everyone.
We will miss her. All of our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time.”
-Jim Brusa, President, St. Mary’s High School

May she rest in eternal peace

“Make yourself familiar with the angels and behold them frequently in spirit; for without being seen, they are present with you.”

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, pray for us!

Our readings today talk to us about our vocation and mission as disciples. We are called to be apostles — “ones who are sent out.” The point we need to take away is that the mission of the Church is our mission — it is the mission of every one of us. Jesus calls every one of us.

The prophet Amos tells us in the first reading that he wasn’t always a prophet — he was a simple, normal person. A shepherd, a gardener: “The Lord took me from following the flock, and said to me, Go prophesy to my people Israel.”

In the Gospel today, Our Lord sends out his apostles, the Twelve, to preach: “Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out, two by two.” We know the apostles were just ordinary men from ordinary families, but Jesus sends them out. He gives them a mission.

St. Paul in the second reading, tells us that the mission of Jesus — the mission that we all share — is to draw the whole world to God. So that we know that God is our Father and so that we live in his love and friendship, as children of God, as sisters and brothers.

The Gospel tells us about the beginning of the Church’s mission, but we need to remember that Jesus is still sending out his disciples — to spread his love, to carry his Gospel to the ends of the earth.

It’s interesting that the Gospel doesn’t tell us where Jesus sent the Twelve, but the Gospel does tell us that their mission started in people’s homes, in families: “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave.”

The message today is — the Kingdom starts in your homes, in your families. The greatest thing that we can contribute to the Kingdom of God is to make a happy home, where everyone loves one another and knows and loves God
