Long Island Nitrogen Action Plan (LINAP) Special Announcement

The Long Island Garden Rewards Program is Launching its Second Year!

Calling all Long Island property owners! Get reimbursed for beautifying your garden and reducing stormwater runoff, one of the leading causes of nitrogen pollution in our waterways.

Long Island Garden Rewards Program Logo
The Long Island Nitrogen Action Plan is once again offering reimbursements of up to $500 to property owners who install rain barrels, native plantings, and rain gardens on their property. These projects not only beautify landscapes but also play a role in safeguarding our surface water and groundwater.

Last year, over 200 property owners received reimbursements to kickstart their projects. These initiatives promise to make a tangible difference in reducing stormwater runoff and protecting our water resources.

The Long Island Garden Rewards program will resume accepting applications on June 10th, providing property owners another chance to embrace sustainable practices on their properties. Take the steps to make a lasting impact today!

Eligible Home Projects:

Rain Barrels: Rain Barrels reduce stormwater runoff by collecting and storing rainwater that homeowners can later use in their yards and gardens, also helping conserve water consumption. Barrels must be a minimum of 50 gallons and are required to have mosquito netting or screening.

Rain Barrel
Rain Barrel reimbursed through Long Island Garden Rewards.

Rain Gardens: Rain gardens are designed to allow rainwater from roofs, driveways and other impervious surfaces to soak into the ground. Rain gardens can filter stormwater before it reaches local waterways, mitigate flooding caused by pavement and enhance your yard with low maintenance landscaping. To be eligible, a rain garden must be a minimum of 20 square feet, use native plants and be maintained for at least three years.

Native Plantings: Native plants are heartier, support a healthy ecosystem, and more resilient to local climate conditions. Native plant gardens can reduce fertilizer, pesticide, and water usage, as well as promote biodiversity. The list of eligible native plants can be found on here:https://neiwpcc.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/NYFA-LI-Native-Plants.pdf

Garden Rewards Program – LIRPC Garden Rewards Program Applications will open on June 10, 2024. Circa 1995

First time on the radio was circa 1995, in Sāo Paulo, Brazil. Never in my wildest dreams I saw myself speaking enough English to hold a conversation, reason why in 2014, when I first got my show on WUSB (Fridays at 6AM) there was mostly music played.

Today I bring to the airwaves what I find the most important topics to be shared with the community.

Thanks to Mort Mecklowski for inviting me to lead the second half of his weekly show - Critique.

Every Monday at noon-ish on WUSB Stony Brook 90.1 FM, also streaming live at WUSB.FM.
On-air and in studio guests, discussing local and global issues.
