Today’s National Nutrition Month topic is inflammation. Inflammation has been a hot topic with dieting and nutrition, but what does it mean exactly? Elite’s resident nutritionist, Lauren, reviews below.
Inflammation is your body’s response to something registered as foreign (think allergies, infections, injuries). Inflammatory response is needed for the body to heal, through chemicals released in your bloodstream. However, if the inflammatory response stays longer than it should, this can lead to chronic inflammation, which includes symptoms like fatigue, depression/anxiety, gastrointestinal issues (diarrhea or constipation), weight gain or loss, infections, and even body pain. Chronic inflammation can even lead to more serious conditions such as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and many other conditions.
How does diet factor in? While there are many factors that contribute to inflammation, there are foods you can eat to decrease inflammation, and foods to avoid to help avoid inflammation, thus improving your overall health. Check out the foods above, and try to add more anti-inflammatory foods to your diet today!
It's Thursday! Lauren is BACK with some nutrition tips focused on metabolism! Metabolism is the process that converts food into energy - and is a big factor in maintaining a healthy weight. Metabolism is influenced by age and genetics, but you can boost your metabolism through diet and exercise with the tips above.
Fun fact: A few foods that are backed by research to help improve metabolism include raspberries, salmon, green tea, avocado, flax seeds, almonds, chili peppers, and even watermelon!

and Lauren's National Nutrition Month series continues, and today’s topic is sugar. Sugar and artificial sweeteners are most commonly consumed in beverages by Americans, but can be found in many other food products as well.
•
Just a few years ago, the FDA updated the nutrition label to discriminate between natural sugars (sugars naturally occurring in foods) versus added sugars (sugars added in processing), in an effort to make it easier to manage sugar intake. High intake of added sugars can lead to heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, and obesity.
•
The takeaway for sugar? Less is better, whether regular or artificial, and read the labels of your food!

March is National Nutrition Month! ☘️ 's General Manager, Lauren, has two ✌🏼 degrees in nutrition. We will be sharing education on nutrition hot topics every Thursday this month. To kick it off, our first topic -- CHOLESTEROL!
•
Cholesterol is necessary to create hormones and new cells, and our bodies make exactly enough in our blood naturally. Dietary cholesterol is found in foods like meats, cheeses, and fried foods, and when consumed too much, can lead to high cholesterol levels.
•
High cholesterol can lead to heart disease and can put you at risk for strokes, but luckily, it’s something you can control with a combination of healthy choices!
•
Tips to control your cholesterol levels include limiting foods high in saturated fat (think fatty meats, full fat dairy), increasing your fiber intake (whole grains, nuts, beans), and maintaining a healthy weight.
