National Panic Day is observed on June 18. It is a day dedicated to supporting our mental health and wellbeing. Modern treatments for mental health conditions are more effective and more available now than they have ever been before. So why not utilize them?

Addiction is a chronic brain disorder characterized by the compulsive use of substances or engagement in behaviors despite harmful consequences. Biologically, addiction alters the brain's reward system, primarily involving the neurotransmitter known as dopamine.

When an addictive substance or behavior triggers dopamine release, it creates a pleasurable sensation, reinforcing the behavior. Over time, repeated exposure reduces the brain's sensitivity to dopamine, requiring more of the substance or activity to achieve the same effect. This leads to tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal symptoms.

At Charak Center, we know how to remedy addiction. To learn how we can help, please visit us online at charakcenter.com or call us at 855.4CHARAK (855.424.2725).

In TMS Treatment a magnetic coil is placed directly on the scalp to target a specific region of the brain. Magnetic pulses then re-stimulate neural pathways in the brain to decrease depression symptoms. TMS has also been proven to treat OCD.

There are many myths and misinformation surrounding mental health. Perhaps the biggest, and most harmful myth is the notion that mental health illnesses are not as real as physical illnesses.

Mental health conditions are, in fact, as scientifically and biologically proven as physical illnesses (like diabetes, for example). In the same way that your DNA can carry a physical illness to your offspring, mental illnesses have just as much genetic relevance. In recognition of this fact, we ask you: are you related to anyone with a diagnosed or undiagnosed mental health illness? Knowing this could help you to treat potential illnesses early.

“How was your day?” “How are you doing?” “What have you been up to lately?”

No matter how small the gesture may seem, showing interest in others shows you care. While these miniscule interactions may be insignificant or commonplace in your own eyes, they can have a big impact on others.

Acts of kindness and of caring can be a shining light of hope that illuminates the darkness in the minds of those who are struggling. Especially in the mental health space, it helps to know that someone is in our corner who cares.

It is impossible to know all the internal struggles that may be currently confronting someone else. And sometimes the correct approach is not to ask. Simply listening and caring can sometimes be what is most needed.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (or TMS Therapy) is a treatment process for depression that has proven to be very effective in reduction of depression symptoms and, in some cases, has led to full remission from depression. In TMS treatment, magnetic coils stimulate regions of the brain in which neural pathways have become inactive. By reactivating these regions, the electronic impulses of the brain can now move along different pathways and this change often results in better overall brain functioning (improvement of depression symptoms).

Through history, societal expectations have discouraged men from sharing their emotional vulnerabilities. Stigma surrounding mental health and fear of appearing “weak” contribute greatly to the discrepancies between men and women who seek care for mental health issues.

June is recognized as Men’s Health Month. At Charak Center, we would like to remind everyone that ‘health’ is not only a physical term, it also applies to your mental well-being. So many men go through life without seeking the therapy or treatment they need. You don’t have to suffer in silence. We can help.

Happy Pride Month!

Today, and all throughout this month we recognize and support the LGBTQ+ community. Every action, big or small, helps build an inclusive world where everyone can live authentically and without fear.

In the mental health space, those individuals in the LGBTQ+ community are at heightened risk of mental health illness due to the societal pressures, stigmas, prejudices, and ostracization they often face. There are already many barriers that may prevent someone from seeking out treatment. Let love be love. Let us not further isolate others.

Let us celebrate with pride, joy, and a commitment to acceptance.

The Summer months are here! With summer comes trips to the beach, cookouts, camping, and more outdoor exercise. While all of these activities are certainly thing we can look forward to, we must also be careful to recognize the increased risks of stress, agitation, and reduced motivation that can come with higher temperatures.

Prolonged exposure to heat in excess of 79o F can cause the forementioned mental health concerns. Furthermore, at 104o F or higher, there is also increased risk of physical damage to heart, kidneys, brain and muscles.

To avoid these difficulties and ailments, please remember to regulate your body temperature, especially when you are outdoors. Hydrate frequently with water, find shade when possible, and remember to prioritize your well-being!

Today is Digestive Health Day! As such, we feel that it is important to spread awareness about the connections between your gut health and your mental health. When you experience nausea, butterflies or “gut-wrenching experiences” those are all prime examples of the gut’s connection to the brain.

In fact, an entire branch of study has been dedicated to the relationship between the gut and the brain: psychogastroenterology. All energy we receive comes from the foods that we consume. Our bodies process that energy into various chemicals and, through these processes, we can foster emotional responses to stimuli.

In conclusion, some foods are good for your mental wellbeing, and others are harmful. It is important to know what foods you are eating, not only for your physical health, but also for your mental health.

Schizophrenia is a condition characterized by disturbances of thought, perception, volition, cognition, etc. This combination often leads to distorted experiences of reality and impaired overall functioning.

About 1 in 100 people have this condition across all cultures. There are widespread misconceptions about schizophrenia. Lay descriptors such as “split personality” add to this misunderstanding.

Although there is a small risk of violence among people with schizophrenia, the vast majority (85-90%) of these people do not exhibit any violent behavior. On the other hand, people with schizophrenia are about 14 times more likely to be the victim of a violent crime than the general population.

On this day, World Schizophrenia Day, let us remember that people with schizophrenia need our compassion, kindness, support, and understanding. Any kind of stigma only perpetuates their suffering.
