September's birthstone is the beautiful sapphire πŸ’™

In lore, sapphire symbolizes nobility, truth, sincerity, and faithfulness. Ancient Greek and Roman kings and queens were convinced that blue sapphires protected their owners from envy and harm.

Traditionally, people have prized these gems for their celestial blues and violets.

Its extraordinary color is the standard against which other blue gemsβ€”from topaz to tanzaniteβ€”are measured. Blue sapphires range from very light to very dark greenish or violet-ish blue, as well as various shades of pure blue. The most prized are a medium to medium dark blue or slightly violet-ish blue.

Come check out our selection of sapphire jewelry!

πŸ’Ž Another famous spinel, August's most recent birthstone addition, was mistaken as a ruby for most of its history!

"The Black Prince's Ruby," which should really be called, "The Black Prince's Spinel," weighs an estimated 170 carats and is currently set in England's Imperial State Crown just above the 317.40-carat Cullinan II diamond. Accompanying its incredible beauty is an amazing history filled with treachery, danger, and deceit!

Its torrid history is recorded back to 1366, when it was stolen from the lifeless body of Moorish prince Abu Said by Don Pedro of Castile. A year later, Don Pedro used the stone as payment to the Black Prince, Edward of Woodstock, for help against a revolt by Don Pedro's own brother.

A gap in its history leads to 1415, when the stone was nearly destroyed during the Battle of Agincourt while being worn in Henry V's gem-encrusted battle helmet. Legend credits the spinel with saving Henry V's life by deflecting a blow while it adorned his battle helmet, and the notorious gem was passed down through several British kings over the next two hundred years until it was set in England's state crown by James I. In the mid 1600s, the Crown Jewels were disassembled and sold, and the Black Prince's Ruby is said to have been bought by a British jeweler for the modern-day equivalent of about $8. Fortunately he later returned it to the monarchy and it was set into Charles II's state crown.

The poor spinel has faced danger at least three times since then: once when nearly stolen by a rascal named Colonel Blood; once in a Tower fire in 1841 though saved by a brave police inspector; and once again during WWII in an attack by German bombers!

Historical jewelry πŸ’Ž

As mentioned in last week's post, August's newest birthstone, spinel, has a long history of being misidentified for a ruby. Many of the most famous rubies were actually spinel! Here's a fun example:

The Timur Ruby of the British Crown Jewels, the center uncut 352.5 carat stone, is actually a red spinel. It is inscribed with the names/dates of it's 6 previous owners from about 1300's-1754. The British took the Timur in 1849 as part of an Indian collection and turned it into a necklace in 1853, as part of the British Crown Jewels. It was believed to be a ruby all the way up until 1851!

What do you think of August's most recent birthstone edition?! πŸ˜²πŸ’Ž

In 2016, a BRAND NEW birthstone, Spinel, was added to the month of August! This is only the 2nd update to the American Gem Trade Association's official birthstone list since it was created in 1912.

Ancient gemstone merchants revered spinel, and it was widely sought after by royalty. It was then known as β€˜balas ruby.’ In fact, many famous "rubies" in crown jewels from around the world are actually spinel! Examples of notable spinel in history are a 170-carat red spinel, known as the β€œBlack Prince Ruby,” that is set in the Imperial State Crown in the British Crown Jewels, and a 398-carat red spinel that sits atop the Imperial Crown of Russia commissioned by Catherine the Great in 1763.

Here's a side by side comparison of spinel and ruby:
