Chicago, IL May 2, 2022--A woman found shot to death in an apartment in Edgewater was just days away from graduating from the University of Illinois at Chicago, her family said.

Chicago police said they found a woman unresponsive in a residence in an apartment building with a gunshot wound to the head.

She was pronounced at the scene.

The victim's aunt said she was a music major at UIC and was just days away from her May 9 graduation.

“Our hearts are torn to pieces,” her aunt said in a social media post.

Police have not made any arrests in her death. An investigation is ongoing.

In my chapter "Hell No" in the book "Unapologetically & Boldly Speaking " I wrote the following.

"Here I am upset with people who were taking everything from me because I allowed them!"

I neglected ME! I have put my dreams on hold for others over and over again while I helped them build theirs.

I got to a breaking point and learned to say "Hell No ". "NO" is a complete sentence and answer from "ME". I don't have to give a reason why and neither do "YOU".

Sunday Funday in Chandler was an absolute blast. The Vegetarian options and Pescatarian optionsc were excellent. Every bite of my food was delectable. The margaritas flights and the Mango Heat were perfect. We got to me one of the owners and I can see the staff is a reflection of her and her husband.
I can't say enough about the great customer service,vibe,and experience despite it being a newly open location that went viral on . I definitely will make this part of my Mommy Self Care Sunday staple.

"My discrimination became a WIN"

Let me share my moment of the "Imposter Syndrome". I was preparing for a virtual panel interview last week for a contract. So I was given the names of the panel for this 4 hour interview. So of course I reviewed their LinkedIn profiles. As I expected they all were some of the brightest minds in Scientific Research, Engineering, Technology, and Data Analytics with multiple degrees and shifts in careers.

They were Scientists turned Technologists, Medical Doctors turned Lawyers,Technologists turned Research Scientists ànd Professors. Of course graduates of Harvard,Oxford (UK) MIT, Columbia, Princeton, Stanford, and Yale who reside in different countries and states.

So I already know this is going to be an interview if in depth discussion because this particular project impact many functional areas globally. So I started to question myself and skill set. I knew that this project was one that encompassed everything I have done in the past in one role on paper. I have worked in Biotechnology domain for a whole decade previously so I know the space. I had never worked in the Agritech(Agricultural) space before so I had some anxiety.

So I talked to my hubby and sister Tanananisha Willis-Vanarsdale about how I was feeling. They both told me that the contract was mine and that I didn't have a reason to be nervous because I was picked along with two others after months of search to have this final phase of interviews.

I meditated to relieve my anxiety. I realized I was still feeling trauma from an event that happened a few weeks back. I was selected for a final interview for another contract and I was the only candidate who made it to that round. Well the last interview was with an Executive and a day before the interview I received a notification he reviewed my LinkedIn profile ( I have LinkedIn Premium so I can see who views my profile). About 30 minutes later the Recruiter calls me to say the contract was pulled due to funding. In that moment I was so angry because I knew exactly what happened. He saw how I looked and it was a wrap.

Fast forward to last Friday I had extremely early interviews because the team is international. I got a surprise interview guest who decided at the last minute he wanted to be a part of the selection process. He was a C-Level Executive. He and I went over the time and it was one of the best interview experiences I ever had. He was creative, innovative, a wealth of knowledge but I was sharing my thoughts in a real and honest discussion on Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning. I felt compelled to be as candid as possible and he was intrigued with my views and responses. He told me don't ever change my interview style and that he looked forward to me joining his team because I was exactly the missing piece that he and his counterparts had been searching for. He said he liked that his title didn't stop me from telling him that I would remove him out of interfering with my SCRUM Teams.

The ultimate decision boiled down to him and the person who selected me for the final round who I would work with daily. That person I knew was going to be the hardest but to my surprise he said your resume and experience is everything I am looking for. So I want to focus this interview on you as the individual. He stated his commitment to championing women and making sure that his organization was diverse, inclusive, and equitable. He stated he reviewed my LinkedIn and my posts on DEI and that he only hoped that his daughter would have a Champion in me and other women as she enter the STEM space once she graduates from college. All of the other interviews were very easy going and intellectual and I felt like this team was just missing ME.

Well I received the contract and when I tell you they are paying me my worth to make sure I would accept the offer.

The lesson in all this is that there is always a WIN in every loss. The other contract was six figures but not as high as I would have liked and the negotiations would have stopped because I was dealing with a team of men who wasn't inclusive.(I have been there too many times in my career.)

God is always on time. The very position that I thought was intimidating is the very position I needed. I also had a team of Men who believed I belong to be there and paid my worth.

March is a very special month for me. The best birthday gift ever in my almost 44 years on this planet earth was given to me on March 26, 2009 with the birth of Uri(ooh-ree)Nazarite.

As we embrace her turning 12 and this last year before she becomes a teenager I am honored to be able to share our journey in raising a Kid CEO along with some wonderful friends I met on this journey through the Raising A Mogul tribe.

Being an adoptive Mother comes with a different set of trials. Raising a child who is Brilliant but is labeled with Inattentive ADD and being Compulsive requires adaptability and patience . Imagine your resume being discarded for an executive leadership role because of sexual biases in algorithms.

Imagine a book you author not reaching your audience because of socioeconomic biases in algorithms.

Imagine scholarships and grants that you search via Google or Edge that you qualify for not showing up because of racial biases in algorithms.

There are many instances of biases in the design processes that we must address that influence public policy, health care, education, and social interactions.

We need diversity and equity in the design process.
