Plagiocephaly is a condition characterized by asymmetrical or flattening of one part of the skull that is often seen in infants. Its symptoms include a flattening area on the back side of the front of the head, lack of hair growth in a localized spot, appearance of a misshapen head, and sometimes, uneven ears. While this may seem scary, about 1 in 5 babies experience this at some point, and it can be corrected! Here are some things that may be recommended if your child is diagnosed with plagiocephaly,
🟠 Tummy time: Spending more time on their stomachs helps babies stay off their backs and helps strengthen their neck
🟠 Reducing time on their back: from sitting in a car seat, baby carrier, or swing, keeping them off their back helps
🟠 Rotate during feedings: this can also prevent torticollis or twisted neck muscles
🟠 Put your baby in different positions in their crib: babies should remain on their backs for sleeping to reduce SIDS but rotate the direction they face
🟠 Helmet therapy: on some occasions, your baby may need to wear a medical helmet to help reshape the skull

If you think your baby may have plagiocephaly, mention it to us at your next appointment and we can help take corrective action!

You’re bound to come across a diaper rash or many throughout your parenting journey. Diaper rash is common resulting in red, tender-looking skin around their diaper region. While diaper rash may be common, it isn’t easy seeing your little one uncomfortable. Here are some tips to help prevent diaper rash:
🟠 Check their diaper often, changing once they are soiled
🟠 Secure diapers loosely to avoid extra friction
🟠 Apply barrier ointment during diaper changes
🟠 Allow their skin to dry completely before putting on their next diaper (small fans, hair dryers on cold setting, or simply fanning with your hand can be helpful)

Colic is characterized by frequent, prolonged, and intense crying in an otherwise healthy baby. Colic can start as soon as a few weeks after birth, and will typically resolve itself by 3-4 months of age. Dealing with colic can be difficult for new parents but there are several things you can try that may help soothe your baby.
🟠 Comforting techniques- Try swaddling or rocking your baby. You can also give them a pacifier or try to soothe them with white noise machines.
🟠 Feeding Adjustments- Burping your baby to alleviate any gas, or making changes to your baby’s diet or feeding position.
🟠 Routines- Establish a consistent routine when it comes to sleeping, playing, tummy time and feeding.
🟠 Rhythmic movements- Like car rides, bouncing, or carrying your baby while you do daily tasks can also help.

We know how helpless it can feel when coping with colic. Please reach out to us, we are here to help. You are not alone.🧡

Just like you pick up an extra cup of coffee if you feel sluggish and need to finish your work day, your teen may feel the pressure of an upcoming exam, practice, or game and think an energy drink will help them perform at a higher level. However, this isn’t the best idea as energy drinks have a myriad of downfalls, especially when it comes to kids and teens. One of the main concerns is the amount of caffeine in these types of drinks. Just one energy drink contains the same amount of caffeine found in six, 12-ounce cans of soda. Too much caffeine can cause heart palpitations, elevated heart rate, and blood pressure and can also lead to anxiety, dehydration, and issues sleeping. Because of this, children should avoid these types of drinks due to the health risks they pose and most importantly keep caffeine at a minimum throughout their younger years.

When most people hear ADHD they think of children, but the truth is ADHD is just as prevalent in the adult population as it is in children. People who struggle with ADHD have trouble paying attention, and difficulty concentrating. This can interfere with work, school, and relationships. Adults who have ADHD are often categorized as distracted, careless, or impulsive, rather than someone who needs help to manage the symptoms of their neurological disorder. While ADHD cannot be avoided, it can be managed and treated with medications, therapy, and lifestyle changes. Adults who suffer from untreated ADHD often have other related conditions like anxiety, depression, and even bipolar disorder. It’s important that if you think you or a loved one has untreated ADHD that you take the steps to diagnosis.

Any time spent outside exposes you to the sun. The sun's rays are good for us and our bodies in small doses. They provide us with Vitamin D which helps us absorb calcium, a vital nutrient needed for healthy bones. On the other hand, excess sun exposure can be harmful. Too much sun can lead to,
☀️ Skin changes- these include freckles and moles.
☀️ Sunburn- red painful skin that can be itchy, and tight and lead to dehydration and peeling.
☀️ Lowered immune system- white blood cells are used to create new skin cells when you have sunburn, this can lead to a weakened immune system.
☀️ Eye injuries- UV rays can damage the tissue in your eyes, burn your cornea, and blur your vision.
☀️ Skin cancer- too much exposure can lead to skin cancer, which can also spread to other parts of the body.
For these reasons and many others, it is important that before you and your family spend any time in the sun, you apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and continue to reapply every 2 hours as long as you are out.

School’s out, but that doesn't mean what they learned has to be. While kids may view summer as a time to forget about school, it's important they don't lose everything they worked hard to learn over the course of the school year. Here are some tips to keep your kids on track.
⏱️ Create a routine- If your child is sent home with homework for the summer, make sure they don't leave it for the last minute. Set aside time for them weekly to keep up on their skills.
🧮 Do the math- Math skills are often the first thing to fade over summer break. Try to incorporate math into daily skills like playing card games, or encouraging them to calculate the change they should receive when buying something.
🎨 Be Creative- Give your kids a fun creative outlet like painting or drawing. Bring them to museums to learn about art or history.
📖 Read frequently- Keep on top of their summer reading list. Start a family book club, bring them to the library, and encourage them to read signs, menus, and posters wherever they go.
📝 Write often- Have your child practice writing and spelling words. Ask them to help write your grocery list, or write a letter to a family member.
