Dr Steven Lin is a wealth of science back knowledge and so grateful he’s talking about the importance of “how” we breathe. 💎

I remember when I first started to become aware of the power of breathing I began to observe how patients breathe in the dental chair.

It's an experience that brings out the nerves in most people, and that's where the bad breathers are showing!

As the dental chair goes back, fast, shallow, chest breathing intensifies, the patient is trying to calm themselves down, yet sweat is pouring down their brow, and they are beginning to get shaky.

Most people breathe far too much and it harms your health.

Breathing is one of the simplest, and most powerful ways you can change your body for the better today.

Awareness of your breath brings you into the space of the unconscious mind. The autonomic nervous system is your background programming to keep you breathing without thinking about it.

However, through conscious breathing, you can guide your body into more optimal states.

In stressful situations (like the dental chair), by connecting to breath and slowing the state of breathing you can control how stressed your body feels.

The mechanism lies in the much maligned gas CO2. We all know that if we get too much CO2 it can cause death, however, we don't often understand that CO2 is critical in the exchange of gas in our lungs and cells.

In order for oxygen to reach where it needs to go, CO2 must rise. If you breathe too quickly then CO2 never accumulates, and oxygen is not released adequately.

Slow breathing, allows the calm rise of CO2 and helps bathe your cells in life-giving oxygen.

That's why breathing into a brown paper bag can help bring down a panic attack.

It's also how you train yourself to slowly nasal breathe at night during sleep.

By calming your breathing you are helping your body breathe in every aspect.

To take an exercise in slower breathing start by timing 1 minute breath.

Your goal is to reduce the amount of breathes / minute to as little as possible. Some can get down as low as 2 breathes (in and out).

So, give it a go, time yourself and start with a slow inhale (try keeping the flow of air as slow as possible), that way your not just focussing on the 'hold'.

Was this easy or hard for you?

How many breathes / minute did you get?

Many of us, like me at one point didn’t know that HOW we Breathe literally has an impact on our entire being. Physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Nor did I know that reeducation of poor breathing habits can encourage relief and sometimes even complete healing on a cellular level.
❓Do you experience anxiety, brain fog, asthma, allergies, sinus issues, tiredness, insomnia, or other health issues ❓
I did an interview with Dr. Robin Perry Braun and this may help answer some of your questions.

Thrive - 2/23/23 On this week's show, Dr. Robin discusses the healing power of breathwork with Maria Donnelly.

This was a reoccurring post for me. My memories on FB consistently from 2006-2018 have a post about being tired, waking 3 hours after falling asleep, not getting back to sleep, or not falling asleep for hours lying in bed.

Lavender, melatonin, sound, eye masks, hot baths, anxiety meds, and many “deep” breaths later…. I was in the same boat. You thought one of those was the answer. 😂
Some of those worked at 50% efficacy and only some of the time. Besides we are NOT supposed to need supplements, CBD, drugs, alcohol and such to sleep. It’s a function our body is designed to do well, naturally.

It wasn’t until I investigated my breathing patterns I thought were “normal” and automatic, did I realize that I was breathing wrong and shockingly even deep breathing wrong! My whole chest would rise with a “deep” breath.

Now asthma free and actually sleeping through the night with NO bathroom trips; I help others do the same. Realign the unknown compensentory breathing patters and balance your serious system- All while boosting immunity and optimizing distribution of oxygen to restore and heal on a cellular level.

How much 💰 💴 💵 are you throwing at covering up your symptoms? Take that number and multiply it by how many years you aim to live. Or learn how to take your breath back and have the power for the rest of your life.

I’ve saved 1x-4x per year hospital visits for bronchitis, asthma, or pneumonia. I saved on $20-$50 per month on at least 4 meds. Who knows how much on oils, supplements, and other things.

For a better functioning brain, control your breathing.

Breathing in brain function:
The ups and downs of the breath are not only reflected in emotion they shape our cognitive functioning as well. For instance, nasal breathing phase has been shown to affect both emotional judgments and memory recall, with people being able to identify emotional faces quicker and remember an object better when presented at inhalation than.

(iEEG) recordings from epileptic patients showed how breathing is entrained with slow cortical rhythms in the olfactory cortex, which in turn modulate higher frequency rhythms in regions closely related to affective and cognitive functioning.

To test whether breathing phase is indeed related to emotion and memory, recruited an independent group of healthy participants to test whether their recognition of emotional faces was affected by breathing phase.

Results showed that the recognition of emotional faces was dependent on the respiratory phase in which the stimuli were presented.

Breathing controls emotions:

Controlled breathing can be used as an anchor into the present, which can help in the process of emotion recognition and regulation.

The prime example of how breathing affects emotion is the physiological and psychological relaxation that occurs when the breathing rhythm is slowed down to 0.1 Hz or 6 breaths per minute, a technique know as slow-paced breathing.

This type of breathing is associated with respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), a cardiorespiratory synchronization in which the interval between consecutive heartbeats decreases during inspiration and increases during expiration.

Slow breathing also increases the variation in time intervals between heartbeats, or HRV - an indicator of a healthy systemic balance and ability to respond to physiological functioning.

Conversely, HRV is known to be reduced by a fast breathing rhythm. On one hand, this effect is highly relevant for stress-related disorders, such as anxiety and depression, in which HRV is known to be reduced.
